PRESENTATIONS TO SOLDIERS
At the Crown lands Office yesterday Mr Wu J. Gallen -was presented by the staff with a -wristlet watch on the eve of 'has departure with the Twenty-first Reinforcements, of .the infantry section' to which he has been posted as a noncommissioned officer. Mr Gallen joined the service m June, 1910, at Gisoome, and two years afterwards was transferred. to Napcer, and a year later to Nelson, where he has served in the capacity of a <srsoghtsman for three and a half years past, and is now qualified tor the field branch of that department. During his time in the service, Mr Gallen has taken a keen interest in military matters, and has qualified for a lieutenant's coirmuseion in the Territorial Forces. In making the presentation on behalf of his feSow-officers, the Commissioner of Crown Lauds and Chief Surveyor (Mr F. A. Thompson), spoke highly of Mr Galiert's zeal and attention to work and bis conscientious discharge of duty. The officers all wished him God-speed and a safe -return, feeling confident that he •would »l>wavs be found doing his duty. Mr Gallen suitably responded. He will leave on Tuesday next. At Ithe Trocadero last night, members of the Public Service and the Scout Signalling Section save an enthusiastic sendoff to Mr W, J. Gallen. The president of the Public Service Association (Mr J. occupied the chair and Private R. King, who is also 'going with the Twenty-First Reinforcements, was present by imitation- Loyal toasts were honoured, and on behalf of the subscribers the chairmans handed the guest of thß evening a case of' pipes as a token of esteem. Mr Gallem suitably replied. Songs were sung by Messrs Allen, King, and Stephenson, anidi recitations were given by Messrs W. Doyle, Rowe and fftmcan.' Mr J JE. Allen played the accompaniments. During the evening it was announced that Mr J. A. Wilkinson wouH be Mr Galen's successor as secretary of the N/elsott Public Service Association. The combined staffs :cf The Colonist gathered round fche stone last evening for the (purpose of bidding farewell to LanceCorporal Lu W. Hunter, formerly of the linotype staff, who is proceeding to the front with the Eighteenth Reinforce- ' ments. He was the recipient of presentations, accompanied by expressions of good win, from .the .proprietors and staffs added to which was the hope that he would .return safely to take his place among the staff. Three hearty cheers were garau for Lance-CorporaO: Hunter, who returns to WiedlvEgton by this evening's steamer. _^
