Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1881.

The native news to-day is of the most contradictory character. We are told on the one hand that the story ahout Daniells' encounter with the Maoris is " absolutely untrue " and on the other that he is a perfectly reliable man, and that he recounts his adventure himself as having positively occurred. Then again it is stated that Titoko Waru's visit to Parihaka with 200 followers is all a myth, while one of the New Plymouth papers asserts that it has the information on the best of authority. It is not easy to understand why there should be all this_ uncertainty. Surely the Government are in a position to obtain accurate information of what is going on, and this should be published daily in order to allay any unnecessary alarm. One thing- is quite clear, that the Government recognise the possibility of an outbreak, as is clearly shown ! by the energetic preparations that are being made to suppress it. VV2 are arjain called upon to chronicl* the death of an old and respected citizen, Mr John Tregea, who in the course of a lengthy residence in Nelson had formed & very Urge circle of friends who will deeply mourn his loss. The proprietor of the highly eupboaions name of Herr Spitzabrick, together with his company, will make his first appearance before a Nelson audience to-morrow evening. Their Btay being necessarily limited, they will give but one entertainment, and, if all that is aaid of them be trae, we %re perfectly safe in promising an immense amount of amusement to the crowds who ara exDe«t«d lo fiock to the Masonic Hall to nitEtsi ths performances of the Herr's talented troape. Thosb who are in receipt of Imperial pensionß will be glad to hear that they will not be required to pay stamp duty after the Ist of October next. Thh Harmonic Society's concert will be given at the Proyiucial Hall this evening when the first part will consist of Macfarren's "May Queea," and the second of miicellaneons selections. Tjib annual general meeting of the Nelson Cricket Club which was held at the Masonic Hotel last evening caused a considerable number of the lovers of the game to be in attendance. Mr H. F. Foote was voted to the chair. The Secretary read the report and balance sheeet which showed the financial position of the club to be highly satisfactory. He stated that the last season had been a most successful one in every point, the trip to Wanganui and Wellington which was so creditable to the Nelson cricketers and the result with the Australian eleven being strong evidences that the cricket interest was well kept alive amongst the youth of the town and country districts. The following officers were appointed fGr the ensuing season : —President— His Worship the Mayor; VicePresident— Mr W. BUck ; Captain— Mr A. Greenfield; Committee — Messrs Kirkpatrick, Jones, Walker, Boddingion, Pollock, and Greea ; Auditors — Messrs Ciouston and Foote ; Secretary— Mr P. Toplisa. The meeting unanimously passed a hearty rote of tbanks to Mr Toplisa for the great as- , sistance he had rendered to the Club in his . capacity as Secretary. It was decided that , the season Bhould be opened on Saturday next with the match which has always proved so popular, namely, English vertut 1 Colonials, and that the wic.kots be pitched at 1 1-80 io the Sotaaicfrt u^t v «.
