Captain Edwin reports : — " Bad weather approaching ; any direction between north and west and south-west. Glass will fall one-tenth with wind Lacking, hut will rise again within twelve hours, with heavy gale from the southward and exceptionally coid weather." The Charles Edward is still detained at Hokitika by had weather. The Kennedy, weather permitting, leaves for Greymouth direct at 11 a.m. to-morrow. The Murray's departure for West Coast ports has been postponed till 2 p.m. tomorrow. The Wallace arrived at Wellington last evening, and leaves on the return trip this evening ; she leaves here for Wellington again at eight to-morrow evening. The Croydon Lass left Waitapu for Lyttel* ton yesterday morning. The Richard and Mary was expected to leave last night. The Penguin leaves Wellington at 1 p.m tomorrow, will arrive here on Friday morning, and sail by the same tide at 2 p.m for Taranaki and Manukau. The Hawca was unable to cross the Manukau bar yesterday owing to the heavy searurning. To cay there is no improvement in the state of the bar, and her departure has been prstpoßed until tomorrow. She will smve here on Friday, and sail shortly after arrival for Pieton, Wellington, and Lyttelton. The Lusitarjia will be the next of the Orient Line of steamers for Plymouth. She leaves Melbourne on September 19, asd the last opportunity of catching her will be by the Rotorua. The atfamer Star of the Seuth, hound from Wellington to Westport, put in here at 12 o'clock last night Fhcrt of coal. She left the former port on Saturday night, and since then bae experienced very dirty weather, and has been trying to force z. passage round the Spit until her supply of coal ran fbort, when she was compelled to put into Nflson to have her bunkers replenished. She will proceed on her voyagr as soon eg the weather moderates on the West Crast. Cnptain Williams, who recently weDt H< nr (Fays the Post), has purchased a new vessel. She is an iron screw-steamer, classed 100A1 at Lloyds', and built on the Clyde by Murdock and Murray. The following are her dimension :— Length over all, 164 f t; breadth, 23ft; gross register tonnage, 416 tons. She baa two compound surface condensing engines of 65 horse-power nominal, and 365 indicated; diameter of cyiinderi 20in and 40in; stroke of piston, 27in; working pressure of boiler 80lbs ; hf r consumption of coal will be 6£ tons per day, with a speed ef 9£ kcots ; she is fitted with two steam winches (horizontal) and patent windlass-, end she bss rpace for 50 tons water ballast. She ia riggfd as a topsail schooner ; her quarter-deck is raised four feet on the main deck ; her drcueht with 480 tons is 12ft, and with 320 tons 10ft. She has accommodation for 20 saloon and 20 steerage passengers. She was to leave the Clyde in the second werk of this month, under command of Captain Williams (who brings her out himself), calls at Cardiff to fill up with coal, and as she leaves the latter port for Wellington direct, may be looked for about the end of October. She is to be called the Westport, and from the plans will be a very welcome addition to our costal traders. j
