To thk Editor of thh "Evkniw* Mail." Fib— Briefly^ [told for the information of "An Inquiring Parent " in your Saturday* istue, the story of the Brigbtwater Committee in connection with the assistant " thai wa« to be" runs somewhat thus :— Tht names of three qualified candidatss wew submitted to the Committee to choos* from, but the aforesaid Committee decided, in iss wisdom, that it would appoint none of tbt , young ladies recommended by the Centra!' Board. The Committeemen had, it appears, a " protegca " of their own to whom thej hid previously arranged to give tbe.assistaatship. Ido not for a single moment wish it to be inferred that the " protcgeo" is not— wich the exception of the proper qualification, which, I believe, is wanting in her case — all that could b« desired. Indeed the m«re fact of standing so high in the Committee's estimation seerria to preclude the possibility of its being otherwise j a 1 till; it was to be expected that the Central Board might insist on seeing its recommendations, carried out, or refuse granting an assistant altogether, and people of common sense thought affairs would certainly take a turn in that direction. The Beven sageß took a different view, and the district is . now reaping the. benefit of their wisdom. That the Committee here haa a crotchet to which it firmly adheres, caring not whether it proves advantageous or not tothe locality, viz :■ never to appoint any person recommended by the Central Board, is a well known fact, and they as firmly believed, on this occasion— perhaps judging from "a priori"— that the Board would never venture to put its veto on their pet scheme. 'It seems, however, tbal the Board has, at last asserted its rights, in consequence of which the prospect of an assistant here Is greatly lessened, if not destroyed altogether. The Committee's behaviour in this— if in no other case — is much animadverted here, from which "an enquiiing pa,renjt" may, perhaps, derive some consolation in his present disappointment. i . . , ...:■■ I am, &c., ; * Common Sensb.
