SIMONSEN'S OPERA COMPANY.
We were sorry to see that a larger number of Nelson atizens did not avail themselves of the opportunity afforded last night of witnessing Offenbach's sparkling opera "The Grand Duchess,/ m which the Company fairly excelled themselves, the whole opera from beginning to end being perforata |n so
spirited a manner that the enthusiasm of the audience could not fail to be aroused and the bursts of applause which greeted them, especially at tho close of lho lively " Sabre Chorus " showed how highly the efforts of the actors were appreciated by nil those who were present. .Madame Simonseu, of course, impersonated the Grand Duchess, and right well did she perform her p&rt, her fofeign accent producing a very pleasing and telling effect in the conversational part of tho opera. Of her singing it is needless to say ahytliing more than it enchanted all who heard it. Miss Carrie Godfrey, aa Prince Paul, was simply perfect, her talent as an ae.tt_.Sß being proved beyoad ali Question by the way in which she threw herself into the part. Miss Leonora Simonsen mado a charming Wanda, singing as well as she acted, and acting as well as.shesang. Signor fticcardi, as General Boom, was-, to use a somewhat tlangy eipressitim sihipl.V Vi Utitiiense , his get-up and bis acting, alike being in every fray illustrative of what the coi_.poser evidently intended the Gene.a. to be. Mr Cram perforoied the prominent part of Frit ife naturally and well \ and Mr St. Clair's representation of Baron J? \_cl_ was most amusing, though at tithes it was a little difficult to hear bim. The other partß were well performed, aud the choruses ware most effective, receiving as they did muoh valuable aid from the orchestra, To-nlghtj for tha first time in Nelson^ Weber*! Opsra, "Der Freischuti., or thd seven magic bullet. *' will be performed, and-, in addition to ths beautiful iliusic) there will bo a powerful attraction In the shape of new scenery, fireworks, and other stage effects. We desire to Correct a mistake which appeared in our yesterday's report wherein tbe part of the Conta Di Luna was erroneously stated to have been tak«n by Mr Ciain, instead of by Signor Liuziti, _______________-____-Mi>i___B_a-H-____-_-___-_a--_--_aa
