Mr Canning, with bis waggonette and pair of horses, drove down to the wharf to inspect some cattle, and while thus engaged be left his trap in charge of Mr Haycock. The latter went into the Custom House Hotel, having handed his charge over to another man, who stood at the horses' heads. Something, however, startled them, and they broke away from him and galloped up the road, and in turning the corner at Auckland Point came in contact with Messrs Sharp & Co.'s spriDg cart, which was being driven by Mr Little, who was unable to get out of their way. The pole of Mr Canning's carriage penetrated the chest of Mr Little's horse, killing it at once, and the shaf tof the latter'B .art pierced tbe head of one of Mr Canning's horses, inflicting such iojuties that it hud to be shot. The other horse, too, wa3 severely injured. Bad aa the accident is, it is a matter for congratulation that no one was seriously hurt. The work of removing the buoy rock in the harbor is being actively carried out by Mr McLean, the contractor. A charge of 2£lbs of dynamite was fired yesterday, the explosion throwing the water, up to some height, and immediately afterwards a large quantity of mud rose to the surface, discoloring the water all round. Tbe shock was distinctly felfc on the Port road. The property occupied by Mr JFletcher, in Hardy street, together with tbe furniture, will be offered for sale by Mr Mabin to-mor-row. The garden is in excellent order, and as the property is in the Building Society, the terms of payment will be found very easy. Mr Mabin reports a good attendance and a fair supply of stock at his sale at Richmond yesterday. Lambs in poor condition realised 6s 3d; cross bred sheep, fit for the butcher, 10s 3d; store sheep 8s 3d, Cows, dry, fetched £4 to £5 15s. Mn Richmond will address the electors at the Port Public Hali this evening. His Committee will meet; at 7 o'clock in the Masonic Hall. Mk' LEVi_srAsr will address a meeting of electors at the Port Public Hall to-morrow evening. The nomination of candidates for tbe representation of the City of Nelson will take place in the Provincial Hall at noon to morrow. The result of the election of two City Auditors which took place yesterday was delared at the Council Chamber by Mr Greenfield, tbe Returning Officer, at halfpast six last night, the numbers being as follows : — H. Edwards, 123 ; G. Hodgson, IH ; R. Aitken, 47.
