We regret to learn thafc Mr Acton Adams, M.H.R., has been compelled by ill-health to resign his seat in the House. .This will of course necessitate an election in the town, and as the Parliament is to meet in a month the electors have not much time in which to make their selection of candidates.
The report that was current the other day, and to which we gave additional publicity, to the effect that an allowance had been made by the N. Z. Accident Insurance Company on account of a sprained wrist, appears to have been without foundation Ho doubt the Company would, with its customary liberality, have paid the amount if demanded, but the accident was so slight that the insured did- not even make a claim. The ■whole story appears to have been a " yarn " worthy of a Yankee author.

At the last meeting of the Nelson City Council the subject was mooted, but did not find much favor. Councillor Everett e&td that after his experience of the Conference of Mayors in 187? he was not (Uapesed to attach much import once i 0 such gatherings. They ■a greed upou certain suggestions to make to •ha Government, and for the purpose of bringing them under their notice they waited upon Ministers, who were exceedingly bland and polite, bowed them in and bowed them out, and promised to make a note of their recommendatious. This, however, was all that ever came of a meeting which must have cost the various municipal bodies represented a very large sum of money iv the aggregate.
