The death is announced of Sir Richard Graves McDonnell, who was Governor of South Australia from 1855 to 1861, and who succeeded the Marquis of Normanby as Lieut.-Governorof Nova Scotia in 1864. In responding to the toast of bis health General Roberts spoke at some length npon the organisation of the British army which he said was in many respects defective. Its great fault was that it was absurdly small and a more manly stamp of soldier was required. They wanted men. Boy soldiers drafted into the army were a failure.
