Tho reporter of the 'lhames Advertiser has arrived froni Te Aroha, bringing intelligence of the diabolical murder of a Maori named Simon, holding a good position, by a Eussian named John Procagy, a miner, who has been arrested with blood stains on his clothes. Tho throat of the murdered man was cut from ear to ear. Ddnedin, Saturday. A fire occurred at Wood's a tailor, at Port Chalmers but it was extinguished before much damage was done. He alleges that he loses £45 in money. - Mr Watt, KM., made an explanation from the Bench to-day re the flogging and sentencing of boys for apple stealing which had been severely commented on by> the press. He said the real punishment was the flogging, and it was necessary to award imprisonment in order to have the boys flogged in gaol. Committal to the Industrial School was no puishment at all, as on good behaviour the boys were immediately let out to their parents. By this mean 3he could to a great extent prevent larrikinism in Dunedin more easily than than it could be cured if allowed to get ahead.
