HORTICULTURAL SHOW.

The first midsummer show under the auspices of the Horticultural Society is taking place in the Provincial Hall to day, and, though the quantity of exhibits is not large, having probably been materially lessened by the heavy rain of yesterday, the quality is in many respects excellent. In the middle of the centre table is a large plant which at onca attracts attention. This is the Cbamsereps or Chinese, Fan Palm, a native of China, shown by Mr E. Burton. It is surrounded by stands of flowers and hand bouquets, of which there is a good collection, hat not to be compared with that exhibited at the last show. Some very fine fuchsias are shown by Mr. N. Edwards and Mr Bolton; a very beautiful specimen of the Tetratheca with its graceful leaf and pretty little blue flower, by 'Messrs Budden and Gamble; and three Achimenes by the same exhibitors. On the platform at the east end are a handsome fern trophy by Budden and Gamble, and fine specimens of the New Zealand Palm and Ti Tree shown by Mr J. Hale. The cut flowers, notably the roses and dahlias, are very beautiful, and more numerous than might have been expected after the weather of yesterday! Petunias in pots, shown by Mr White, are well worthy of notice, as is a collection of ferns by Mr Campbell of Nilestreet West, a collection of ferns by Miss Hodgson, and a frame of dried ferns shown by Mr Wright. The vegetables in the Grand Jary room are a sight indeed, including monster potatoes and onions, and a variety of other kinds, which we only regret we have not the time to refer to in detail. Much of the fruit, too, is deserving of special notice, but for the same reason we mast pass that by and content ourselves with giving the PRIZE LIST.
