CnßisTonußCH, Thursday. Wi Wherepa was sentenced to death to-day for the. murder oorf r bis wife .at tho Chatham Islands'. He' made' a long and pointless statement when called upon by the Judge to say why he should not be sentenced, the burden of whifch w&s that they tried to give him medicine in his food, and his dislike of the doctor who' attended him. He said nothing bearing on the murder. The jury at first wanted to recommend the prisoner to mercy on account of his wife's adultery, but the Judge said that -no evidence had been brought on the point, and they then returned a verdict of guilty. ;: ...:.. :■ i Walter Gibson was committed for trial today on a. charge of murdering Kerrison at Prebbletpn, and will be,' tried on Monday.. , A new weekly society' .'journal' called " Liberty " is announced to appear on Saturday, next/ '■ ... The Premier promised to lay the matter before the Government at the earliest opportunity. Hokitika, Thursday. Robert Armstrong, a miner, has been missing since Monday last. The police and about 100 miners are searching for him in the neighborhood of a big paddock where be was seen last. It is supposed he has fallen down an abandoned shaft. Auckland, Wednesday. Joe, the Fijian murderer, has got quite fat and sleek in Mt. Eden Gaol, and has obtained the sobriquet of " Happy." At the Good Templar Conference, the Gr.W.O.T. submitted the report of the past year, showing his work in connection with the Order, principally in the Wellington district, where the Order was making material progress. The G.W.S.'s report showed that ten new lodges had been opened during the year, and that the financial poaiition of the Lodge was better than ever.
The schooner, Lady Don now ashore near Hokianga, is a, complete wreck. The insurances oh the vessel are £400 in the Victoria and £300 in the National ; on the cargo, £350 in the United. A boy named Taylor, three years old, was severely burnt on Christmas Eve by his right .dress accidentally catching fire. He lies in a precarious conditisn. The Parihaka Natives are beginning to suffer from the effects of their indolent and improvident habits. A gentleman who-came through Parihaka a few days ago states that food is very soarce at the , settfemenfc and that the- Natives are digging up half ripo potatoes in order, to; supply their daily wants.
