S Some of our Cabinet Ministers have played some strange antics with " special trains," but none of them have ever gone the length of those in Victoria. At the opening of the Goulburn railway last summer the Minister of Railways ran a special train at the rate of sixty miles an hour through the valley, scattering flaming sparks right and .left among the long dry gross, the result being a series of destructive fires bringiog loss and ruin to some unfortuaate selectors. The Australasian states that the [matter has been brought before Parliament) and the sum required to pay tha compensation due is estimated at £6000. The excited politicians, who drank champagne to the glory of the Cabinet Minister on that expensive trip, are ■ow inclined to believe, that the luxury of travelling sixty miles an hour was too dearly bought. Writing en the Mata affair, " Augur" Bays: — M It is gratifying indeed to find the V.R C. wakening up, and making an attempt to perform the Herculean task of cleansing tbe Augean stable; but in the operation there musf be no partiality. The rich owner mußt be treated in the same manner as the poor one, and if there is anything like suspicious or ' inexplicable ' running the owners and jockeyß must be called upon for an explanation. If, as it asserted, the M*ta people are tbe champions among the 'clever division' of New Zealand, they are not in it witb some of our Australian • tiddley-winkers,' who can give the visitors a stone and a good beatiag into the bargain ; and I repeat that it iB a matter for regret that the stewards of the V.R.C. did not commence upon some of our own people." Amaniu lowa has been arrested for assaulting bis wife, and he was found guilty, even though it was shown that he only stuffed her mouth with putty when he wanted to go o sleep. Do men have no rights at all?
