EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Board -was held yesterday, when there were present Messrs Barnicoat, Rout, Malcolm, Shephard, Graham, Campbell, the Bishop of Nelson, and Mr Dencker. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. Resolved, That a cheque be drawn in favor of Mr Scolt for the sum of £163 18s 6d, on account of Earamea school, but that the item for freight, wharfage, &c, be referred hack to him for particulars. Resolved, That a cheque for £4 17s 6d be drawn in favor of Mr Blumer, -tempoiary teacher at the Town boy&'-scbool during tbe illness of Mr CbepmeU,

, Resolved, That a cheque for £14 2s 6d be drawn in favor of the Waimea West School Committee to defray the expenses of repairs to the teacher's house at North Division. Resolved, That the account from ihe Resident Magistrate's Court at Motueka be paid, and the Inspector be called upon for an explanation of the circumstances in connection i with tbe case. Resolved, That the present contractor for supplying stationery and school material to the Nelson Education Board be requested to furnish a full and detailed statement of all books and school material furnished to each teacher or otber person authorised to receive the Bame since the date of his first contract with the Board, specifying the number of each sort of book aud material, and the value of same, with the balance of stock on hand and in transit still remaining to the Board* credit. Resolved, That a Ccmmittee be appointed to investigate the school material account sicca the date of the present contractor's first contract, with power to call for returns and accounts in connection therewith, suoh Committee to consist of the Bishop of Nelson, Mr Graham, and Mr Rout, and to report at the next meeting of the Board. Resolved, That Miss Johnson receive three mouthß* notice that her services at Tasmanstreet school will be no longer required. Resolved, That the letter from the Town Committee respecting pupil teachers at Tas-man-street school be referred to the Inspector, and he be directed to prepare a scheme in connection therewith to lay before the Board at its next meeting. The report of tbe Board of Examiners on the applications for tcachershina at Collingwood, Foxhill, and Black's Point having been read, it was resolved, Thafc Mr. J. W. Humphreys be appointed master of Collingwood School at a salary of £120 per annum aud house ; his appointment having been . suggested by the local Committee, and he being considered the most eligible of the applicants. Resolved, That with respect to the candidates for teachership at Foxhill, both Miss Holland and Miss Cole are eligible, but looking at the relative ages of the applicants, the Board Rdvise that Miss Holland be preferred. Resolved, That the recommendation of the 'examiners be adopted with respect to the candidates for. the teachership of Blacks Point School, viz", That examination papers be prepared and sent to the local Committee for Misses Anderson and Gillet, and that the appointment be deferred until after such papers have been returned and inspected by the examiners. The teachership of the school at Eightyeight Valley being rendered vacant by the appointment of Mr. Humphreys to the mastership of Collingwood School, it was resolved, That a teacher be advertised for at a salary of £72 per annum and house. Resolved, Thafc Miss Tarrant be appointed assistant at Upper Wakefield School. Resolved, That Miss Tarrant's position as assistant teacher at Neudorf and at Wakefield be regarded as a continuous appointment in the service of the Board, so that she will continue to have the privileges of the former position subject to such reductions as have been made in similar teacherships. ' Resolved, That readiug aloud form part of the qualifications of candidates for teacherships. Resolved, That the grant for repairs at Eighty-Eight Valley be deferred and considered along with the other " Requirements for 1881." Resolved, That tbe application for pecuniary assistance from ths Tadmor be deferred. Resolved, That the Secretary inform the Chairman of the Tadmor Committee that, owing to the rearrangement of the school staff in Nelson, Miss Johnson is leaving, aud recommend tbe Chairman to enter into communication with Miss Johnson with a view to the vacant teachership. Resolved, That Miss Johnson be informed tbat the Tadmor subsidised school is vacant, and that the Board has communicated in her favor with the Chairman of the Committee. Resolved, That the statement of teachers accounts for books be referred to the subCommittee appointed to examine tho account for school material. Resolved, Tbat the sum of four guineas be granted to tbe Stoke Committee to defray the expense of a ventilator for the school. The Chairman informed the Board tbat the former teacher's house at Richmond bad been let at 5s per week, and banded in tbe sum of £3, amount of rent n ceived. A memorial from the inhabitants of the Waignarro, Takaka district, having been read, it was resolved, That the Inspector be directed to report aa to the requirements of the district after his next visit to the neighborhood. Resolved, Tbat the assent of the Board to the amendments of the Nelson scholarship regulations made by the Hon. tbe Minister for Education be signified to the Education Department. Resolved, That tha application from Stanley Brook for a grant of ;£2O cannot bs acceded to. Resolved, That the several applicat'ons for grants for repairs and new schools re-* ceived from a number of local committctß be deferred until next month. An application from the Lyell Commitfee tbat Mr Bakewell's salary should be paid as from tbe date of bis appointment havi ng been read, it was reiolved tbat Mr Bakeweil'. salary be paid as from tbe 25tb August, the date of his arrival at tbe Lyell. Resolved, That Mr Bakawell bs directed to remit to the Secretary the whole of the money received by him for school bookß, and the Board will grant the Lyell Committee the amount disbursed by them for freight, &c . of same. Resolved, That the recommendation of the Town Committee that the Board should not encourage the practice of supplying teachers with school material on application to the Inspector without reference to the committee be referred to the sub-committee appointed re school material. ' Resolved, That the following persons be appointed as members of the Finance Committee, viz., the Bishop of Nelson, Messra Rout and Graham, and that all applications for new buildings, repairs, &c, be considered by them and reported upon to the Board at the next meeting, and that any otber member desirous of acting on such Committee be allowed. Resolved, That the application of the "Charleston Committee for a new school cannot be complied with, Resolved, That the letter of the Secretary to the Education Department re requisition be referred to the Inspector. Resolved, That Miss Coveney be informed tbat any question relating to the conduct and discipline of her school must be settled by her local Committee, and that the compulsory attendance of children is, hy the Aot, left in the hands of the Local Committee. Resolved, Tbat with respeot to MrNichol's application to lease the school reserve at Motupipi tbe opinion of tbe Local Committee be invited. Resolved, That a copy of the letter received from the Waimea West Committee with respect to tho separation of Appleby from Richmond be sent to the Richmond Committee, and that the opinion of the latter body be invited as to its desirability. Resolved, Tbat tbe Karamea Committee be informed tbat the remedy for tbe matter complained of is in tbeir own bands by enforcing tbe Animals Act. Resolved, That a master for the Lower Takaka scbool be again advertised for. The following resolutions, submitted by Mr Rout, were referred to the Finance Committee: — 1. That from Januury 1, 1881, the sum of eight shillings for each scholar in average daily attendance at each school be set aside for a scbool fund, as defined by the Education Act. 2. That quarterly payments be made to \ each School Committee in February, j May, August, and November in each year on the following scale: —For any school under tbeir control having 100 children and over in average daily atten- I ance, 5s each per annum ; 80 children, 6s ; 60, 7s ; 40, 8s ; 30, 93 ; 20, 10s ; less than 20, lis. 3. That air school bookß, maps, and other material be charged at cost price to each Committee upon tbeir requisition for such articles, and be deducted from tbe amount of their quarterly payments ; ajso tbfit thp Committees be iqforjned
