Captain Edwin reported at 17 p.m. :— *' Bad weather approaching ; any direction between north and west and south-west. Glass will rise within 12 hours. Wind backing after 16 hours." The Patea is expected to arrive here from Patea tomorrow morning. She h announced to sail for that port again the same day. The Murray sniled for Wellington at six o'clock this morning. Tbe Charles Edward was unable to bave Greymouth this morning, but, weather permitttirtg, will leave tc-ruorrow morning for We^rport nnd Nelson. The Kennedy was placed on the cradle opposite tbe Anchor Foundry this morning to be painted. The Taiaroaleft Onehunga.it 10 a.m. today, will arrive here to-morrow night, and sail for Picton, Wellington, and South at 930 a m. on Thursday. The Rotorua arrived at the Bluff from Melbourne at 6 o'clock last night. She brings a supplementary Suez mail. The Arawata leaves Melbourne for New Zealand ports to-morrow. The Hawea left Ficton at 9 o'clock last night, and was signalled when we went to press. She will come into harbor about pix o'clock to-night, and pail for Picton, Wellington, and South by the same tide at seven p.m. The Colopaxi wil be the next of tbe Orient Line of steamers for Plymouth, leaving Melbourne on the 16th instaut. The Lusitania follows her on the 30th. The Albion was tendered at Ilokitika yesterday, and left there in the afternoon, but whether she will call at Greymout.h or come direct to Nelson is not known. She is expected to arrive here to-night, and is announced to sail for Wellington and Duntdin by the same tide at 9 p.m. A party of miners at the Rczorback, West Coa6t, the other day picked up a life buoy with the letters "ELI," end "Dunedin" ■underneath. There appears to be tho re wains of the letter "K" in another part. It is supposed to have been thrown or washed off ■ the Elibank Castle, which vessel has frequently visited the coast. Those who have carefully noted Captain Edwin's forecasts of weather, and there arp many, especially among those connected with shipping interests, who have done so (say* Ihe Oamaru M^il), will fully admit that tbe predictions have been wonderfully correct. Of course it is scarcely to be expected that jo a new department absolute correctness on nil occasions can be obtained, and when thf J'act is considered that there are no observing rotations on the west coast of the south end uf the island, whence our " bad weather " comes, our readers will agree that the esti mates have been very correct. Captain TSdwin has hitherto been assisted by the harbormasters at the several ports, and a small pum has been paid to them for dome the work, but those payments have now ceased, and the work will have to be voluntary. Several of tbe harbormasters, appreciating the value of the " forecasts," have offered to do the work without remuneration rather than lose the information which the weather office is able to give them.
