Napier, Tuesday. Colonel Whitmore's Clive Grange estate bas been disposed of to John Roberts, of Murray, Roberts, and Co.. for £50,000. The properly includes 4600 acres, 13,000 sheep, 250 head of cattle, and working plant. Col. Whitmore leaves for the old country at tbe beginning of the new year, and does not intend to return. News has been received that tbe Poverty Bay Petroleum Company bave at 70 feet depth struck a vein of oil. Tbese veins are like leaders in quartz. The manager expects to strike the main reservoir in about a fortnight, and dams have been erected to catch the oil should the well overflow. There ia considerable excitement about Bhares, wbich are changing hands at 3s, only sixpence being paid. If the Gisborne -well turns up trumps, companies will probably be formed to sink wells in the southern portions of the province, as indications of petroleum beds exist witbin a few miles of Napier. Gisborne will probably be shortly prospected for gold as well aB oil, a rich piece of qnartz having been picked up among metal carted from the river fco make roads. It was much water worn. Other similar pieces of quartz were fouud, but none showed gold. The programme for the Jockey Club March meeting is out, and about £1300 is offered, the Cup prize being a 500 guinea Cup. Christchuroh', Tuesday. A dwelling house was burnt down early this morning at Southbrook. The house was occupied by Mn A. Meyer and six children.
All were got out safely, but very little of tbe stock waß saved. The house was insured for £60 and the furniture for £50 in the London and Lancashire office. The annual session of the Diocesan Synod open9 this afternoon. A whale 60 feet long was found on New I Brighton beach this morniDg. The Rev David McKee, formerly Minister j of the Rutland Presbyterian Church, Dublin, who recently came here for the benefit of his health, died yesterday. Pearse, who was recently shot hy a boy, had the bullet extracted yesterday, but is still in a precarious condition. Dunedin, Tuesday. Inspector Mallard has determined to leave the police force sooner than accept reduction in rank. In tho libel case, Mackay v. Connor, the jury returned a verdict for one farthing damages on each of the two counts. Governor Caldwell, of the Dunedin gaol, by the last two mail deliveries has received quite a flood of applications for the post of hanaman of Ah Lee. William Adams aliut Dee has been committed for trial for attempted uttering of a forged cheque, Wellington, Monday. Mrs Fhzwilliam ot tha Lingard Troupe died early this morning. A large sperm whale was seen near the entrance of the harbor last night. Auckand, Tuesday. The establishment of mercantile relations between Aucklaud and Taranaki via the West Coast is being vigorously advocated. H M.S. Danae leaves to-day for Fiji. The Lord Mayor of Dublin acknowledges the receipt of £1(581 from Auckland for the Irish Relief fcund. At a meeting of thc Board of Grammar School Governors to-day a resolution wus passed forbidding the masters and secretary to take part in scholastic meetings outside ihe Board business without permission. !
