WkitiKGTON, Monday. the following is a list of the Inspectors of the police force, together with the dates of their appointments, to whom notice has been sent offering them the alternative of sub mitting to reduction or leaving the service with the usual compensation allowance : — Inspector Moore, Ist July, 1873 ; Inspector Thompson, Ist July, 1873 ; Inspector Fox, Ist July, 1873 • Inspector Malkrd> 23rd January, 1875 } Inspector itiely, 7th May, 1875 ; Inspector Feaat, 28th June, 1875 There were five other Inspectors whose names were originally mentioned for reduction, but who will not be interfered with. The following is a list of those officers with their dates of appointment :— lnspector Pender, 11th May, 1864 ; Inspector Buckley, Ist .July, 1866 j Inspector BcuJly, 26th Decembpr, 1860 } Inspector ftuierson, Ist July. 1868 ; Inspector Hicksou, 20tti August, 1872. The following is the list of the SubInspectors in a iked for reduction with their respective dates of appointments • - SubFnspector Kenny, 9th June, 1868 ; SubInspector Bullen, 1 4th March, 1870; Sublospector O'Donnel, 10th Septeniber, 1872 ; Sub-Inspector i.Gobdall, 18th JnnPj 1874; Sub Inspector Pardy, 17th November, 1875 ; Sub-inspector Smith, Ist May, 1877. The i J osi states: — " We are informed that during the last financial year the Government Insurance Department issued 2274 policies for £725,254. The accumulated funds now reach .£460.000, and tho annnal income is £147,00' J. The Department has nearly 12,000 policies in force assuring over! four millions s'.erlinpr, and has paid in claims during the ten years of its existence £140,0C0." Ddnedin, Monday. A man named Geo. Bevau, a cook at a restarauut in Manse-street, fell through a skylight into McLean's store, a. distance of 12 feet, and sustained some severe internal iD juries. James Watts, ironmbnger, who left for Melbourne a fortnight ago, broke his leg on the steamer and died in the Melbourne hospital. It i 3 said that Mr. Carrow of Christchurch will, probably, receive the appointment of Inspector of Railway Stores. The condemned Chinaman, Ah Lee, now seems to realise his position. The Supreme Court was occupied the whole day with the case of Mackay v. Connol, contractors, in which £4000 is claimed for alleged libel in letters written by Connol to one Stevens, in Western Australia. The parties were partners in building the Port Chalmers graving dock. Inveecargih, Monday. The crushing of the Geelong claim at Longwood yielded half an ounce to the ton. g §Tho Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association's Show takes place on the second Thursday in December. CimiSTciiDECir, Monday. A sailor named Fiaber fell off the train when eutering the Lyttelton tunnel on Saturday and very narrowly escaped death. He was severely cut nbout the head. A number of pupil teachers are opposing the reduction of their salaries on tha ground that they are articled for a given period at a given rate of pay. The weather continues very favorablo for agricultural purposes.
