DEATH OF DISTRICT JUDGE MANSEORD." Ddxedin", Saturday. Judge Mansford died early this morning. Private letters have been received here stating that Sir J. Vogel will return to the colony shortly and re-enter the political arena. A three roomed cottage forming a portion of a joint building at the corner of Hope and Leith-Btreets was destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. It was occupied by J. Porteous, who, with his wife, has been staying at Mosgiel for the last forl night, and the origin of the fire is a mystery. The building was completely gutted, but the adjoiniug building was saved by the brigade who promptly put ia au appearance. The joint building was ineured by C. S. Reeves ia the National office for £350. The Star hears that Mr J. Lowe's services is Engineer of Permanent Ways hare been dispeused with. It is belived that the duties performed by that gentleman will be undertaken in future by the department of the Engineer in charge of this Island. The skeleton found in the Upper Owake is believed to be that of Gray, a workman who disappeared four year ago. Annan and Hood charged with having a still in their possession were discharged from custody by Judge Williams becauso Mr Waft, R M., had remanded them under the" Justices of the Peace .Act," and subsequently attended at the gaol and verbally remanded them under the •' Distillation Act." They have since been re-arrested. Porteoua' furniture was insured in the Standard for £200. Michael Doneghue, a navvy at Mullocky Gully, inflicted a wound in his abdomen letting out his entrails, He ia not expected to recover. Oamaiuj, Saturday. The perjury case against Watt and Murphy has been adjourned till October 16. Johnston, the man who was accused of stabbing the landlord's brother and night porter of the White Hart Hotel, was committed for trial. There was a good deal of discrepancy in the evidence, the accused having apparently been in the hotel at halfpast Iwel re a.m., while the prosecuting evidence aoughfc to show that the row took placo about 11 o'clock, the time when the hotel should be closed. The Magistrate commented on thia, and hinted that a prosecution for perjury might well arise out of it. The police were instructed to watch the evidence given on the subject at the Supreme Court. Some days ago a man named Pearse was shot in the knee while walking on the banks of the Avon. His position has now become so precarious that to-day his depositions were takeu by the R.M., and three lad9 supposed to have been concerned in this miscellaneous shooting have been arreßted, charged with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The boating season opens to-day. Upwards of fifty fishing Ucenseshave been issued by the Acclimatisation Society. The vship Opawa brings ten single men and 92 single women, all nominated. iKVEncARGiLL, Saturday. A large number of excursionists, including several overlanders from Dunedin and Christchurch joined the Rotorua to-day, bound for the Melbourne Exhibition. A batch of unemployed passed through last night en route for the Orepuki railway works. Hawera, Saturday. Hone Pihami, who lately got 1500 acres on the Waimate Plains from the Government, has sent thre* tons of bread, besides flour, sugar, &c, to Parihaka. Napier, Saturday. A monster petition is being got up praying the Government to cancel the recent order in Council appointing the Jockey Club's Committee members of the Domain Board for the old racecourse [reserve. For years the reserve has been in the hands of the Jockey Club and not used for public recrea r tion, but from the constitution of the newly created Board it is feared the town will lose what in other hands would be a valuable park^ The greatest indignation is expressed at the advice which actuated the Government in the matter. The petition prays that the reserve be vested in the Corporation. The Herald Bays the whole thing is a squabble between the Racing Club and the Jockey Club, and the 7 e'egraph contradicts it, and says that the next elections for Napier will hinge ou this reward the town has received for supporting the Government. Auckland, Saturday. Arrived — Erench war ship Dayat from Tahiti. She carries six guns and 155 men. She remains her« one week and then proceeda to Valparaiso. Extensive renovations are proceeding at the Government House. The Education Board having received only J514.000 out of the sum for school builmg voted last session, have resolved to inform the Government that another £20,000 will be required. David Moore, who so gallantly saved the pafaengers and crew of the barque Schiehallion on her last voyage to London, was publicly presented with the Humane Society's bronze medal at the Theatre Royal last night. Some hundred Maupo (?) natives are emigrating to Hauranga, Tawhiao's settlement. Sub-Inspector Pardy takes a lower grade as Sergeant Major.
