EDUCATION BOARD.
The monthly meeting was held yesterday. Present: Messrs Wastney, Graham, Eout, Malcolm, Barnicoat, Campbell, Dencker, aud the Bißhop of Nelson. Eesolved, That a circular letter be sent to all Chairmen of Committees, calling their attention to the reduction of salaries which will come into force on the Ist October. Eesolved, That at each meeting of the Board a statement showing the available balance be laid before it. Resolved, That the account for school fittings, &c, from Collingwood be referred back to the local Committee for further explanations. Eesolved, That a cheque be drawn for the Committee allowances to December 3:st on. the same scale as that for the last half yea r. Eesolvcd, That the Secretary draw up a statement showing the effect of giving only the 10s per head to the Committees aa re- ' ceived hrherto from the Government, and , obtain from the Committees estimates of their requirements for the purposes to which Committee allowances have jhitherto been : applied, with a view to a revision by the Board at its December meeting of the next year's grant for Committee allowances. Eesolved, That the following appointments be made, the Local Committee in each case having been consulted:— Miss M'Phee to be mistress of Charleston Girls' School at a salary of £120 per annum and house; Miss Wastney to be mistress of Hillside School at a salary of £65 per annum and house; Miss Stanley to be mistress of Ferntown Sphool at a salary of £80 per annum; Miss Hansen to be first assistant mistress at Toi Toi Valley School at a salary of £84 per annum; and Miss Brown to be third assistant at the same school at a salary of £42 per annum ; : Mr Bakewell to be master of the Lyell Bchool at a salary of £130 per annum. Eesolved, That a master for the Lower Takaka school be advertised for at a salary of £100 per annum and house. A letter from the Commissioner of the Government Insurance Department with reference to the insurance of the lives of teachers was laid before the Board, hut no action was taken in the matter. Eesolved, That the application from Karameaf or a grant for fencing be deferred until nex ttnonth. Eesolved, That a sum not exceeding £35 be granted the Pakawau Committee for the purpose of enlarging and completing the school. Eesolved, That a sum not exceeding £36 17s be granted to the Collingwood Committee for the purpose of re-covering the roof of the master's house, and that a further sum of £20 be set aside for the repairs at Collingwood, subject to the report of the luspector. Eesolved, That the application of the Town Committee for a grant of £25 be acceded to. Eesolved, That the Secretary invite tenders from the different Banks in Nelson for the Board's Bank account. Eesolved, That the application of the Spring Grove Committee for permission to sell the master's old house, and to use the proceeds in carrying out certain repairs and planting, be acceded to. Eesolved, That a further sum not exceeding £6 be granted to the Lower Moutere Committee to enable them to fence a small portion round the,, master's house, and to complete the necessary excavations. Eesolved, That no allowance be made the Centralßuller Committee towards the rent of the teacher's house. Eesolved, That no increase can be made in the grant to the Eockville Committee for a tank and spouting. . Eesolved, That the sum of ten guineas be voted for a bell for the Haven Eoad school. Eesolved, That a Bum" not exceeding £6 be allowed for a tank and stand for the new school at Karamea. ~ In answer to Mr Moere's application for an extension of time in which to complete bis contract, resolved, that the Board will,, on the completion of the building, consider how far, if at all, the penalty may be ra-, mitted. Eesolved, That Mr Eobson be informed, in reply to his letter, that all augmentation moneys will be paid up to the 30th September. A letter from Mrs Chattock, with reference to the appointment of an assistant at Eeefton having been read, the Secretary was directed to inform her that the Board, taking all things into consideration, acted to the beßt of its judgment in making the appointment. Eesolved, That a copy of Mr Hodgson's letter of the 4th May, 1878, be- sent to the Church Committee at Charleston, and that they be informed that the Board does not see its way to make the necessary repairs at the Girls' School, such matters as are at present required belonging to the landlord, but if the Committee are deterred from executing such repairs themselves by reason of- the shortness of the Board's tenure of the building:, they be informed that the Board is willing to take it for a fixed term, say two years. Eeßolved, That Captain Humphreys be informed, in reply to his application, that the payment of the subsidies on the old scale will be continued until the 30th September. Eesolved, That the Secretary inform the Town Committee that the Board sees no reason to alter its resolution with reipect to the salary of the mistress of the Port School.
