Bluff, Monday. The Rotomahana arrived at 8 a.m. to-day, haviug left Melbourne on the Slst inst. at 12.30 a.m. She sails at 5 p.m. for Dunedin. Wellington, Mouday. Father O'Reilly was buried yesterday. An immense number followed his remaius, and it is stated that nearly 15 000 people witnessed the cortege, which was headed by a Baud 70 strong. At the Magistrate's Court this morniug Henry Joseph Ross, alias Henry DeLago, second steward of the steamer Arawata, was fined £50, or, iv default, six months imprisonment for smuggling. He was discovered fit six o'clock this morning carrying up tbe wharf a portmanteau containing thirty-four pounds of tobacco Arrived — Barque Malay from Newcastle. When off Barrett's Beef the vessel struck on a rock and iB making a little water. Greymouth, Monday. A small cottage iv Threadneedle-street was destroyed by fire on Saturday night, but the cause is unknown. The owner was absent at. the time. The premises were not insured. A Court of Inquiry as to the stranding of the Kennedy was held on Saturday at Greymouth before tho Resident Magistrate aud two Assessors, when Captain Dillon was held fiee from blame, and his certificate was returned to him. Christciiurch, Monday. At a pigeon match at Raugiora a man named Hossack was accidentally shot in the groiu. A man named Kennington fell thirty feet from the scaffolding at the new Odd Fellows Hall on Saturday but escaped comparatively uninjured. Increased facilities are to be provided for loading sbips at Lyttelton. Tenders are invited for a new breastwork, 1160 feet long with a jetty 120 feet, ultimately intended to be 400 feet, long. Tbe Industrial Exhibition Commission held its final meeting on Saturday aud drew up a report to the Government. Ralph Redings, who was working a circular saw at Hargreaveß' yard this morning, was struck in the face by a splinter of wood, which laid opeu his left cheek, split the upper jaw, and divided tbe palate. At tbe Compensation Court to-day, in the case of Regina v. David White, three and a balf roods of land taken for tbe Allington railway workshops, the Court awarded £786. White claimed £1500, aud the Government had offered £600. The number relieved at the soup kitchen last week averaged 108 per day. A large number of tbese were men travelling through Christchurch in search of employment. Auckland, Monday. Blair Brothers, the owners of the missing cutter Three Brothers, have been makirg a search along the beaches of the Port Charles district during the pastweek, but can discover nothing. They believe tbat the cutter was run down. At a meeting of railway employees on Saturday evening it was resolved to petition Government to rescind the decision effecting the ten per cent reduction of salaries. There are no signs of the-mail steamer as yet (11*30 a.m.) Otaki Monday. The well-known roadside inn, kept by E. , M. Symonds at Paikakariki, was burnt to the ground this morning about four o'clock. No furniture was saved. Invercargill, Monday. The lease of run No. 415, Takatimos, consisting of 44,000 acres, was submitted at auction to-day and purchased by a company of four at the upset price of £5 yearly, and the assessement of a similar amount. The property is overrun with rabbits, and it is believed that tbe lessees intend making their profits from ihis source.
