CHINESE PIRATES. NARROW ESCAPE OF A MAIL STEAMER. Cooktown, Monday. The Eastern Australian mail steamer Bowen has arrived from Hong Kong and Singapore with the Torres Straits mails. She reports that on the upward voyage to Hong Kong a piratical plot among the Chinese passengers to seize the vessel was discovered by a conversation being overheard. The passengers were mustered, and, all hands being armed, twenty-five Chinese were arrested. Boxes containing loaded revolvers and packets of powder, with fuses attached were discovered. On the arrival of the vessel at Hong Kong, the prisoners were handed over to the authorities. The Bowen also brings news of the arrival of the New Ireland colonising steamship Genie at Singapore .on the 7th June. She had three feet of water in her hold, and her engineers had deserted her.
