CITY COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting was held last fcigbc. Present — Crs Everett (in the chair in the absence of the Mayor), Crewdson, Cross, Harley, Hounsell, Levien, Little, and Trask, A letter was received from Captain Garsia Btating that a drain near his house in Trafalgar Square was broken, that he had complained to the Inspector of Nuisances, but that nothing had been done towards repairing ifc. The Surveyor was instructed to attend to the matter at onoe. A complaint having been received from Mr H. Ray, the Surveyor was instructed to repair Alma street, and to repair the footpath. A letter from Mr W. Akersten with reference to tho state of a footpath and drain in Victory Square was referred to the Works Committee. The City Surveyor reported that it would be better to obtain a new station meter and exhaust than to purchase those offered for sale by the Wellington Gasworks Company. .Referred to the Gasworks Committee. The Chairman stated that a sp a iial meeting had been called for Thursday next to consider the tenders for the work at the Beach, and the Town Clerk was instructed to give the proper notice to the Harbor master and tb the Captain of the Naval Brigade requiring them to remove their boat sheds. Cr Harley drew attention to the bad state of the Port Road, and suggested thafc a different mode of gravelling ifc should be adopted. Cr Levien had long been trying to induce the Council to obtain such a machine, and proposed that the Town Clerk should be instructed to write to the Town Clerks of Melbourne and Dunedin asking for information with regard to such machines. The proposal was agreed to. On the motion of Cr Trask it was resolved that tenders be invited for the supply of 200 yards of Croixelles gravel. It was agreed on the motion of Cr Trask to gravel the footpaths from Mr Patterson's to opposite the Golden Fleece, and from Brook-street to the Catholic Station in Manuka-sireet, and to clear oufc the water tables on the west side of the Waimea Road from Snow's Hill to the College Hill. Cr. Little proposed that the footpath in . Grove-street near the Bush Tavern he gravelled, and also stated that he had received numerous complaints from fche residents in Beachville to the effect that although they had paid rates for 20 year nothing ha d been spent on their street. The Chairman said that is was not a public street and he did nofc see how the Corporation was to repair it. Cr Little said that Grove-street near Mr Burns' house been much cut up by the Corporation carts, and suggested that it should be gravelled. He also again called , attention to the complaint made by Mr Stallard that since the drain had been laid in Hardy street his cellar had beeu frequently flooded. The Surveyor was instructed to move back the fence in front of the house occupied by the overseer of the gasworks, as it encroached on the road. An opinion was received frora Messrs Fell and Atkinson regarding the liability of the Council in the event of their cutting down the summit of Ru..sell-street, and as this was unfavorable to the Council, Cr Trask said he should withdraw his motion for the present, but would bring it forward again if Messrs Brown and Freeman, the only objectors, could be induced to agree to the work being proceeded with. The Surveyor was instructed to prepare plans of a small cottage to be erected near the Corporation stables, where the carter might live, at a rental equal to the interest upon the cost of construction. It was agreed to continue the footpath on the Waimea Road as far as the Town boun- • dary at a cost of £10. The Council then adjourned.
