CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting was held last night. Present : the Mayor, Crs Levien, Trask, Crewdson, Cross, Little, Johns, and Everett. Permission was granted to Mr Everett to erect a varandah upon the usual conditions. Leave was granted to Mr Darby to connect with the Bridge-street sewer. An offer of Mr Newport's to quarry stone for the Coporation was declined. A letter was read from Eicketts and Co., asking that an extra sum might be allowed them on account of the contract for clearing out the eel pond. Crs Little and Trask were in favor of giving the applicants £5 as the job had been a very dirty and unpleasant one and the work exceedingly well done. Cr Lovien would much rather put his hand in his pocket and give something himself than thus deal with the public funds. — Cr Trask did not mind and would give 10s.— Ur Crewdson might do so too, but he bad only a fourpenny bit. — The Mayor thought it would be a bad precedent to establish. Cr Traak's resolution was then put and negatived, whereupon a subscription was started among the Councillors. ; A letter from Mr J. A. Harley and others was read calling attention to the mischief being done on the Church Hill by children and others of mature age running about , and damaging the trees and shrubs. — Ordered that a notice board be set up, warning people against doing such damage. ' A letter was received from Mr Witney stating that after being two years in the . service of the Corporation ho had been dismissed without any fault being found with him, and asking to be taken on • again.— Letter referred to the Surveyor. * : A letter from Mr Eochtort ,was read, asking that the gas service might be extended in Manuka-street.— Eeferred to the Gas anl Waterworks Committee.

A letter was read from Mr Darby and

others calling attention to the 3tate [of the ditch in Sf Vincent-street.— Referred to the Works Committee.

A letter was received from Mr Sharp ask* ing the Council. to close the Hooker Boad at tho east end of Bridge-street, and stating that he was prepared to give a piece of land in its stead, giving a right of way to the hills at the back. It was resolved to hold a special meeting to consider the matter in accordance with the provisions of the Act.

The Gas and Waterworks Committee reported thai the reduction in the price of [gas had led to so largely increased a consumption that a new bench of five retorts was necessary; that an inch gas-pipe be laid along New-street from Collingwood-^street to Mr Twist's; that an additional water Bervice be laid on to the gaol; that a lamp be erected In Manuka-etreet near Mrs Renwick's. — The report was adopted. The City Surveyor reported that the contractor for cutting the channel near the reservoir having thrown up his contract, new tenders had been called for.

The following tenders were received —

For making footpath on Waimea Road — Mrs Grant, £50- (informal on account of not being sent iv on a printed form); W. Taylor, £55 (accepted); Malone and Party, £60; Reardon and Stevens, £64 10s; J. Gribble, £77 10s;' J. Lock, £93 10a. . . Cr Trask proposed that W. Taylor's tender be accepted. — The Mayor moved as an amendment that no tender be accepted, on the ground that the work was unnecessary. — Cr Levien seconded the amendment. — Cr, Everett thought it would be unwarrantable to treat men who had taken the trouble to tender in such a manner. The Council had been unanimous in deciding to call for teuders, and they should know their own minda better than to change about in that manner.Cr Levien explained that he was not present ai; the time. — Cr Little thought the work was much wanted.— Cr Crewdson had opposed it originally, thinking it would cost £150, but was willing to accept the tender. — The Mayor's amendment was then put and lost, himself and Cr Levien.^eing the only ones in its favor. -' ■'■.:' . .. . '

The following tenders were received for cutting a channel at. the reservoir: -11. Collins, £25 (accepted); Hudson and Co., £27 10s; G. Wise, £28 10s; J. Gribble, £29 1.45; Brown and party, £35; Ricketts and Co., £43 15s. !

On the motion of Cr Everett, it was resolved that the Normanby Bridge be painted, and the knobs replaced. On the motion of Cr Everett, it was resolved that the Surveyor be authorised to employ additional labor if necessary. Cr Little drew attentiou to the state of the footpath between the Albion wharf and the Custom House; to the condition of the fordway in Collingwood-street; to the fact that there was a hole in the floor of the Collingwood Bridge; to the flooding of tha cellar of the Panama Hotel whenever the pipe drain was flushed from the mill lead; to the state of the footpath and water tables on the north side of Hardy-street between Alton and Tasman-atreetß; and to the fact that the authorised repairs in the Wood had not been carried out.

The Mayor thought that Cr Little was a little impatient. JHe had asked at the last meeting for work that would require three months to carry out, and should not complain if it was not all done in a fortnight J The Council then adjourned.
