• I Melbourne, Friday. The debate in tho i Assembly on the Reform Bill continues, and there are increasing doubts whetherthe Government will obtain an absolute majority of the House in favor of the measure at the second reading, which is expected to take place on the 10th June. Should the siatuiory majority not be obtnined, a dissolution of the Assembly is certain to come about.
The barque Madras has arrived from Java. She caught fire at sea, but it was extinguished without much difficulty. A portion of the cargo was damaged, and a further quantity was jettisoned. It is now stated that Laycock has no intention to row in England. Arrived — Wakatipu, from Wellington. Sydney, Friday. In the Legislative Assemby last night, Mr Coonan brought charges tantamount, to an implication of acts of corruption against Judge Meynott. The Ministers promised that a Commission should be appointed to inquire into the matter.
The police are out after the Quirindi Bank robbers, but up to the present time have found no traces of the culprits. The new Licensing. Bill passed the second reading -in the Legislative Assembly last night without a division.. '*
Brisbane, Friday. Mr BUR. Boor succeeded Mr Pring as Attorney-General of Queensland. ••• Anew trial has been granted in the case of Brooks versus Swanwick, in which' the plaintiff, a prisoner, sued for £150 given in charge of the defendant when the latter undertook to defend him in his trial. In the first trial a verdict was given for tbe plaintiff. Mackinlay's station has been attacked by blacks. The manager, mailman,. and a stockman made a determined resistence 'until; the arrival of the troops, when their. assailauts were completely routed.- •-• ;• \
