The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, MAY 7, 1880.

We understand that in answer to his telegram to the Government relative to the unemployed, Mr A. Greenfield has received a reply that the Government is informed that laborers are required at Hokitika, Greymouth, and Reefton, and Mr Greenfield was to inquire if the men now out of employment would be prepared to go to either of these places, and that if they were the Government would be prepared to give facilities for their transport. We also learn that after seeing some of the men Mr Greenfield replied to the effect that most of the men were married and had families, and that they could not leave their families. He also asked whether the Government could not find the men some employment nearer than the places referred to. The following tend'rs have been received at the Public Works Office for the Kaituna Cart Bridge contract:— Accepted: Akersteu and Ereeman, Nelson, £561 17a lOd. Declined: Joseph Gilbertson, Nelson, £646 Is 8d; W. Bethwaite, Nelson, £780; Lusty, Woodhouse, and Newman, Blenheim, £780; Williams and Alexander, Haveloek, £922 17s lid; D Wemyss, Blenheim, £1072 17s. I The Naval Brigade will fire for the Company's Cup to morrow afternoon, at their range on the mudflat. Ciiose's American Museum cf Art, a wonderful moving mechanical tableau, illustrated by 168 figures, will be opened at the Masonic Hall to-morrow afternoon at three o'clock, and in the evening from seven till ten. The Exhibition also contains a group of life size wax figures representing our Saviour before Pilate.
