P ' An advertisement signed by the butchers of Gisborne, anent stoppage of credit, is thusreferred to and explained by the Poverty Bay Herald: —"A notification frora the butch-ars of Gisborne appears in our columns. In the language of their trade they state that in the matter of credit, they intend to take the bull by the horns and stop it — not the bull but the credit. They argue that as the times are out of joint, people must do without their joint unless they can pay for it. They have been as patient as lavibs but can be so no longer. The business at the hest is no great chop, and if they go on giving credit any longer they will soon cease to have a stake in the district. Like their sheep, they have been shinned by giving credit, and like their corned meat they are in a pickle to meet their payments. One week, and only from week to week, will they give trust, and they trust tbis will be sufficient, and so determined are they to observe this rule that if the people should go down on their marrow bones they will not break through it. They have
11 -united to gird up their loins against the ruin" lj ous system "which has so long prevailed. | They intend to give no quarter to people who \ iave heen several quarters on their hooks for fore and hind quarters of meat. They have faecu hied like calves, and -will stand it no /onger. They intend turning over a new li tat hy not turning over an old leaf in their le( Igers to increase an already long out-stand-ing account. It is better that their laniba shou Id skip, their sheep grow wool, aud their oxen graze upon the splendid feed there is for tb em than that they should be converted into joints to fatten their customers who would let the butchers starve beforo they pay their bills." A hoy stood with an umbrella, with a cord tied to it, in a public doorway. Eleven persons thought that umbrella was theirs, and carried it with them the length of the string. Thoy then suddenly dropped it, and ! went off without once looking back or stopping to pick itr up again.
