The result of Colonel Scratchley's inspection of the Lyttelton harbor, is that recomjnendations will be made to the Governtnert to have four more big guns erected, in addition to the four already here. A run out was made in one of the small steam launches plying in the harbor, to judge of their adaptibility for a torpedo service, and it is probable that the Government will be asked to obtain five or six small vessels for torpedo boats. At the gates of the Catholic Church yesterday over £200 was collected in aid of the Irish Famine Relief Fund. A meeting was held in the school-room after mid-day mass and resolutions carried promising to give every assistance to the general committee appointed recently at a public meeting for raising funds. Auckland, Monday. The schooner Minnehaha, owned by McKenzie and Bigelow, has been wrecked in Harvey's Group, South Sea Islands, and all her valuable cargo lost. The Captain and crew wore saved. She wa3 insured for £3000 iv a floating policy on the cargo aud vessel. A remarkable discovery has been made the Moagonui near Karakara. On the sandhills being blown away by the recent gales, a great heap of bones and the remains of a house were uncovered. The" natives know nothing of it, and have no traces of a settlement or burial place there. It is believed that further examination will show that they are the remaiua of a race inhabiting New Zealand prior to the immigration of the Maoris. Lyttelton, Monday. Arrived— Ship Pleiades from London, 83 days. out. She has 114 passengers, all well. Wanganui, Monday. A man named Thomas Trice has disappeared. His clothes were found near the Virginia Lake, and it is feared that he has committed suicide. The lake has been dragged, but,: owing to its depth and the 1 inequalities 6i the bottom, without success so far. Trice was formerly landlord of the White Hart Hotel, at Marton, but failed, and has been depressed in spirits ever since. Dtjnedin, Monday. The collection at St. Joseph's Cathedral yesterday in aid of the Irish relief fund realised £92. The action Melldram v. Prpudfoot, in which .£IOOO damages is claimed for the death of Melldrum, a carter, through a tramway accident in October last is proceeding in the Supreme Court. Col. Scratcbley went round to White Island off Ocean Beach where he took soundings and inspected the neighborhood of the Heads for sites for batteries.
