NEW ZEALAND GROWN TIMBER.
The following return has been presented to both Houses of the General Assembly, showJ^g (approximately) the quantity of New Zealand grown timber, sawn (first cutting only) at the various sawmills in the Colony during the year ending 31st December, 1878, and the half-year ending 30th June, 1879 .—
The Registrar-General appends a note to this return, stating that no returns were rfeceived of the limber cut during 1878, and half the year 1870, at 18 mills. The quantities cut during 1877 hare been taken from the census returns and entered as for the year 1878 in these cases. The total amount for the year thus estimated was 18,355,310 feet. The quantities cut for the half-year of 1879 at the 19 mills have also been estimated by means of the census returns, taking half the quantity cut in 1877 in each case. mil i -rm--sr.-.--r ■ -. .1 v---- -
The Honorable the Minister for Public Works has furnished a statement of the total expenditure and liabilities on account of the Public Work 3 and Immigration Loans up to 30th September, 1879 i From this statement it appears that the total sum expended has been £14,079,542 18a Bd, which has been distributed as follows:—Railways, £7,883,787 16s 5d (exclusive of Provincial expenditure on Canterbury aud Otago railways, valued at £1,104,281) ; roads, £774,451 5s 7d ; payments to Road Boards, £227,000 ; coal exploration and mine development, £10,835 8s ; water supply on goldflelds. £421,800 12s lid j aid to Thames goldflelds works, £50,000 ; telegraphs, £344,912 17s lOd ; public buitdinga, £529,994 Is lid -, lighthouses, £82,247 18s Id } tmgeellaaeoua public works, £245,138 16a ; departmental, £136.189 18s lid ; immigration, £1,801,962 17s 7d ; land purchases, £720,454 9s 2d ; contingent defence, £80,000 ; charges and expenses on raising loans, £554,269 16s 3d ; interest and sinking fund, £218,500 ; total, £14,079,543 183 Bd. The liabilities up to 30th December amounted to £3,123,487 3a 4d, viz .—Public works, £1,755,621 133 lOd ; land purchases, £1,210,802 9s 6d ; immigration, £97,063 ; contingent defence, £60,000. This briDgs up the total expenditure, when present liabilities are met, to the respectable sura of £17,203,031 2s.—tost. Anything but a flattering picture is (saya the Dunedin Herald) given of the position of many deferred payment settlers in this province. la the course of the proceedings at the Land Board yesterday it wa9 incidentally stated that one settler, after paying£l7 10s per acre for land, and spending all his available capital and all he could realise on assets in improvements and rent, had not obtained one sixpence from hia holding. The picture is black enough, and though the statement is no doubt true, it cannot be taken as anything like representing the general condition of this class of colonists. It would be curious indeed if some settlers, many of whom have had but limited agricultural experience, did not make a mistake in their selections.
