INTERPROVINCIAL .

fmicss AOENor.I . .. Wellington, Saturday. A rather serious collision occurred at SllTerstream last night The Wellington 445 p.m. train was waiting for the Wairarapa evening down train, which, when i arrived, took the sidiog. It was followed by ft rery heavy goods train, and, owing to a mistake in the estimate of the train by the driver, partly caused by the rails being slip pery on the inclioe, the goods train ran into the last Tan of the train in front, smashing itto pieces, and throwing two passenger cars off the rails The passengers were only roughly shaken. 3 The Collector of Customs took the following additional evidence regarding the loss of the schooner Laurel:-John Glover, mate of thejessel for three years, stated that on the 13th January last when going into the Waitara the schooner struck on a reef within fire miles of that place, remaining fast for •bout three minutes. Her centre board was •boot two feet down. She made no water then They arrived at Waitara, unloaded and took in ballast and sailed for Greyjnoutb, and when 50 mil as off that port it was discovered that the water was about three inches above the ballast. The leak was discovered near the centre board, and they •topped it temporarily with pieces of old guernsey. They tried to take the pieces out jh port fttttXWKOS bat could not. When he

heard of the accident, he at once put it down to the centre board leak dpenlng out again. The Customs duties for last month were • £J 39 {) > a °d for the previous month £134,061. Some greengrocers having consignments of cucumbers to day entered them at the Custom Hocie as'vegetables, but the Customs declined to pass them duty free, considering them to be fruit, and therefore liable to duty. Donedtn, Saturday. The races had to be postponed till Monday owing the wet weather. In the 24 hours* walking match the competitors were Scott, Brooks, Delaoey, West, Malcolm, J. H. Henderson, Drummond, Allen, and Haggerty. The two latter soon retired, the pace being too hot for them. At ten this morning Broofcs had done 63 miles, Henderson 58, aud Drummond and Scott 57 each. Christciicrch, Saturday. In the Diocesan Synod last night, it was agreed that in view of the probable opening of the nave of the Cathedral within a year or lfc months, a regulation, to be embodied hereafter in a statute, should be prepared to change the duties of the Dean, au 1 chapter, and the regulations to the Bishop and diocese, &c. [From a correspondent.] Wellington, Saturday night. The reduction in the honorarium this morning wbs unintentional entirely, and when the mistake was found out, the chagrin and annoyance displayed by a number of the members was rather ludicrous. The item which Mr Turhbull intended to reduce was £21,675, being the expenses of both Houses last session, but when putting the vote, the Chairman took it off the expenses of both Houses this session, £2^690, and the result was that the House broke up in rather au angry mood, the disappointment being ap parently very keen amongst many of the members. The numbers were 26 to 21. There is iittle doubt that the whole question will again open.
