Mr Cox, tJe Government Geologist, has forwarded to the Colonial Secretary a report regarding the Wairarapa auriferous reefs, the principal points in which are that there is an abundance of quartz iv the locality, there being several outcrops of quartz, though no gold is visible in any of the specimeus. A couple of samples of stone were taken from the centre aud one side of the reef, care being taken to provide agaiust fraud in the shipe of "salting" or "prepared specimeus," and these were assayed at the laboratory with the result that one sample yielded at the rate of 14dwts I grain and the other 12 dwts I grain to the ton. The quartz is rubbly not difficult to work. Quaru taken from the other reefs in the neighborhood was also tested, and one sample gave at the rate of * Iwts to the ton. The gold is so fine in the stone that it cannot be detected even with a magnifying glass. The prospectors not having the means to erect machinery have suggested that the Govern ment should advance £500 for that purpose, and in the event of it turning out well that a £5000 reward should be paid for the dis covery of a payable find, the money to be deducted. Ward for similar charges. Christchcrch, Thursday. At the inquest on S. G. Baldwin, who was found dying in a paddock in Heathcote Valley, a verdict was given that deceased died from congestion of the lungs brought on by intemperate habits and exposure. The deceased was an " allowance mau " sent out from England. He had spent his allowance and mortgaged what was to come Patea, Thursday. Forty six natives have died at Paritiaka during the last fortnight, and there are still from sixty to seventy more prostrated with dangerous fever. The natives are calling upon Te Whiti to restore the dead to life again.
