To the Editor of tue " Evexixq Mail." Siijt,-— Will yoij please permit me a small space in your paper, as I want to aak why there are so many public houses in Nelsoa. 1 don't see how they can possibly do the least bit of good ; but, oh ! it is dreadful to think of the harm they do. I daresay a great many people would think it is not my place to write about such things, as I am only a girl ; but if I was a man I tbink I would try and stop strong drink being sold ia Nelson as it is done now. And now, §ir don't you thiuk something could be done to' siop it. Why are a few lazy men allowed to sell poison (for it is nothing else) to ruin men, women, aud children, for ihat is what it does It makes reapectable men drunkards and women and children worse thau beggars. How many little childreu have become orphans and beggars just because their fathers took one drop too much. Oh 1 Sir, ' I do so much wish there was not a public house iu the world, but auyhow why should there be any in i\ e l_,ou. Dou't you think the people of NWson would be much happier and better off if there was none of that horrible stuff sold. Ido so much wish that some of the ministers and other gentlemen would try and stop iutoxicatiug drink being sold as it is done at present. Is it not possible to persuade those who are now doiog their bi-st to ruiu their fellow men to become Good Templars ? I think they might do something if they tried. I never hear any
of the ministers preach about it. I wish when they were preaching they would say something against it. Surely they might do some good. Hoping that what I have written might do something towards stirring up the people of Nelson.— I am, &c, A Little Gibl.
