Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1879.

Ur to the tiiuj of our going Io press no telegrams had reached us of last night's I Parliamentary proceedings. A short but sharp thunderstorm passed [ over Nelson between 9 und 10 o'clock last

night, and had the effect of rendering the atmosphere clearer than it has been for some time past. \t Wakapuaka there wa9 a very heavy hailstorm, one of our informants having given us such an account of a pile of hailstones which he saw that we were half inclined to believe that he must have mistaken oue of the recent landslips for a heap of these icy tear drops from the clouds. The Claud Hamilton which arrived from Melbourne vii the West Coast this morniug after lying off Hokitika and Greymouth since Monday night, brought a large number of passengers for the various ports, including several who had recently arrived at Melbourne from England by the steamers Rotomahana and Durham. A sk )KT account of the plot of the opera of H.M.S. Pinafore, and a critique upou tbe performace of it by the Company about to visit Nelson, frora the Timaru Herald, will be found in the fourth page Tub inquiry iuto the wreck of the barque Messenger commenced this afternoon before L. Broad, Esq., R.M , and Captain Turnbull, who arrived from Hokitika this morning in the Claud Hamilton to act as Nautical Assessor. From our telegrams we learn that the division on the no confidence debate is to take place to-night, and that the Opposition are certain of a majority of four, or may possibly secure six, oue member apparently having not yet made up hh mind on which side to vote. The next move in the game after the defeat of the Government will be looked for with considerable iaterest, as it is said tbat Sir George Grey, loath to part with the power he so dearly loves, will endeavor to satisfy the House with a re-constructed Ministry with himself still at the head. As, however, a want of confidence in him will, in the event of the amendment now before the House being carried, have been so plainly expressed twice, the second time after an appeal to the couutry, it is quite possible that the Governor may insist upon the present Ministry resigoing in a body, and send for the leader of the Opposition to form a Government. But whatever may be the issue, there is every reason to believe that Sir George does not intend to be removed frora his present position without a struggle. The Nelsou Cricket Club will play the opening game of the season in the Botanical Reserve to morrow afternoon, wben it is hoped there will be a good muster of the members. The wickets will be pitched at two o'clock. Me Burrell has on hand a quantity of smoked fish prepared under his own supervision, which are of excellent quality and will no doubt meet with the approval of all who may favor him with their orders. We notice that Mr Tucker, the officer in charge of the Telegraph Office, who is always ready to consult the public convienence, has adopted the hint thrown out by our correspondent " C " yesterday, and has posted the weather warning published by C.iptain Edwin to-day in the lobby of the office. Liquidation. -Being about to realise on my stock I have re-marked the whole at prices that ought to effect a speedy clearance. The stock is very large, which most of the Nelson people know, aod one that the drawiug room as well as the kitchen may be furnished frora. This is an absolute clearing sale, and no reasonable offer will be refused John James, Liquidator. — Advt.
