Messenger, the Victorian sculler, is expected to visit Wellington again. Uearn wishes to row him again, but Messenger wants his expenses paid and the stakes to be £200. Wednesday. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency have received the following telegram bearing date London September 27 :■— Wool sales closed at an average decline of Id to IJd per lb. on the 26tb instant. The sales comprised about 290,000 bales ; 40,000 were held over for future disposal, and 180,000 bales were taken for export. Combing has declined Id per lb. since the close of last sales. Superior clothing washed decliued l£d to 2d per lb. ; scoured declined Id per lb since the close of last sales. Medium and inferior greasy decliued Jd to Id per lb, also cross bred IJd per lb. The market is unchanged in superior greasy. Lambs and clothing washed declined Id per lb. since the dose of last sale. The Continental demand waa good, but the Home trade purchased sparingly. The American demand increased. It waa reported this morning on the authority of an ex-Minister that a reconstruction of the Ministry would ensue with Mr Macandrew as 1 reuiier and Mr Balance as Treasurer. It was also stated that Mr Pyke will support this reconstruction. Chbistchdrcu, Tuesday. The Canterbury Cricket Association last night determined to write to the Australian clubs playing the New Zealand team last year asking if any Australian team will come here this season. The Registrar's returns for Christchurch and district for September were, births, city 69, district 128; marriages, city 23, district 14; deaths, city 20, district 35. The deaths in the same period last year were city IS, district 11. John Jones has been charged in the Magistrate's Court with forging and uttering a promissory note for £45 with intent to defraud F. B. Lloyd. He was remanded. The talk of starting another evening paper here is nothing new. It is reported that Sir George Grey will be asked to select a member for the Thames out of the present candidates. Hokitika, Wednesday. The s.s. Claud Hamilton was tendered today. She left Sandridge for Hobarton on the 22nd ult., and rounded Cape Pillar on the 24th, and arrived in the roadstead early yesterday morning. She experienced strong easterly winds since leaving Cape Pillar. She brings a large cargo and 87 passengers for all ports. She leaves to night for Northern ports.
