CITY COUNCIL.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting was held on Friday night. The following report of the Public Works Committee waa adopted : — That the Government be charged £12 10s per annum for water service at sheep dip at the Port; that half -inch water service be laid on at railway station at the Port; that £3 be allowed Mr Clark, Beachville, towards building a culvert; that the footway in Collingwood street be repaired as soon as convenient; that gravel be taken out of ditch in Washington Valley, and be spread on the road as suggested by Mr Haddow; that Mr J. M'Artney's request be complied with; that the City Surveyor be authorised to purchase cine inch pipes from Mr Patterson; that one load of gravel be taken as requested by Mr Burford, and that the additional 100yds be ordered; that the City Surveyor take delivery of 60 tons of coal from N. Edwards &c, on account of their contract. A recommendation of the Finance Committee was adopted to the effect that the offices of Collector of Rates and Inspector of Nusiances be amalgumated, the salary for the latter to be £50 instead of £110 as at present, the Town Clark being instructed to inform the Inspector that the alteration is made entirely on financial grounds. The Finance Committee presented the following report : — Present His Worship the Mayor, Crs Everett (Chairman), Levien and Hounsell. The Committee have to report as follows:— (1.) On application of MrH. Hargreavea for the office of Meat Inspector ; That the
Committee are unable at present to recommend the appoiutment of an additional Inspector for this purpose. In connection with this matter the Committee wish to bring under the consideration of the Council the desirability of combining the offices of Collector of Rates and Inspector of Nuisances, and attaching to the latter office a salary of say £50 per annum instead of £110 as at present. (2.) With reference to the proposal now before the Council for laying a larger main down Brook- street Valley, and relaying the present u/ain across the bead of the Town, the Committee beg to submit for the consideration of the Conncil the following suggestions : (1.) The Committee submit herewith estimate of probable receipts and expenditure in waterworks account to the end of the pre sent financial year, namely, 3 1st March, 1880, at which date they estimate the credit balance will be £1890. (2.) That of this sum they recommend that £1000 be placed at fixed deposit, and the interest therein placed annually to credit of waterworks accoont, and the remainder kept available for expenditure on ordinary '< extensions such as laying services, &c, or . for any other purpose in connection with Waterworks for which the same may be required with a view to a further reduction in the water rate after the end of the present financial year. (3.) That in order to prevent any deficiency in the supply of water in the higher levels the Committee suggest that the Council should take immediate action to stop the waste of water, and for this purpose should refuse to continue to supply water from ihe waterworks to any water closet unless provided with a proper cistern and ballcock and I the uge of water by means of a hose or irre- | gation for gardens, &c, be only allowed to a limited extent, and a strict supervision exercised in reference thereto by the Inspector of Nuisances, and that the Bye Laws upon this subject be revised and made more stringent and rigorously enforced; and that the consumers of water living at higher levels be recommended to supply themselves with cisterns, and that the Council lay on the water to such cisterns with proper ballcocks free of expense. (3.) The City Surveyor has been requested to furnish a written estimate of the cost of the proposed extension. (Signed) Edivd. Everett, Chairman. Edwards', including freight, cartage, fire-plugs, and values, £4,338. The cost of lifting, carting, and relaying the present main, £625 ; total, £4,963.
