A notel attempt to "extend the franchise" was made i|i the " Evening Post " office the other morning. An individual, after looking through the electoral roll, and finding that it did not contain his name, asked for the loan of a pen. On being asked for what purpose he required it, he explained that he waa about to add his name to the list of electors. Being informed that the law did not admit of the roll being " revised " in this expeditious way, he left, bemoauing his lot as one of the " 65,000 serfs " referred to so often by Sir George Grey. The JV. Z. Times has the following on Parliamentary " maunderinga ":— "Mr Manders, M.H E., for the Lakes, baa set a good example to other hon members. He stated, in the course of his speech the other evening, that he for one was not afraid to go to his constituents 'on principle/ and that if they chose to reject him he would be quite content, in pursuance of that principle, to direct his attention to aome other pursuit j and the hon gentleman even went so far as to inform an admiring audience that he would be prepared to shoulder his pick and shovel if nothing better turned up. We have heard that but one step separates the sublime from the ridiculous, but this is the first time we ever thoroughly appreciated the uarrowness of the chasm which separates the Parliamentary honorarium from those wages which are the reward of honest and perspiring toil." A project is on foot in Christchurch to form a retail trade projection society by keeping a private record of bad " marks," by means of which shopkeepers will be forewarned against people who go about from firm to firm opening fresh accounts, when their creditors have refused them further trust. The eighth number of Hansard having appearred, we turned to look for Sir G. Grey's Financial Statement. The following is what appears: — " Sir Grey delivered the Financial Statement, fAs the honorable member was apparently reading the Statement, and as Financial Statements had always previously been supplied to Hansard, the reporter in the gallery did not take notes. The Statemeat not having been supplied, and no report having been taken, there is no record of it.]" Jack Kaylass, an aboriginal, has been sentenced to death at Adelaide for blowing out the brains of another native, because he objected to have him as his son-in-law.
