AN ACTRESS' WARDROBE.
An English journal says : — The British soldier who "spends half-a--crown out of sixpence a day " is a mere dunce by the side of some of our actresses. The recent lawsuit between a milliner and dressmaker, Madame O , and Fanny Roberts, the whilom pensionnaire of the Graitete Theatre, where she figured in Orphee aux Enters at £ -1 a month, proves that the bold soldier-boy does not count, and that the path of glory strewed with " loot " is no longer on the battle-field, but on the stage. Fanny Roberts first made her appearance on the neutral territory of Monaco. She was remarkable for her beauty, and flattered by the notice taken of her by a royal personage, she came to Paris, and there threw down her gage. Necklaces of £6000 in value were presented to her, the most costly things were hardly good enough for her, and one gentleman imported for her from a royal purveyor in London a case of the finest Habana cigars money could purchase, for ahe had a weakness for the " fragrant weed." Fetes were given in her honor ; she dethroned Hortense Schneider, and was ready to accept the heritage of Madame Musard. The Cafe Anglais echoed to the sound of her musical laughter, and she left the stage to hold a real court of her own, with more than one prince to do her homage. Madame O— -'a bill is as long as your arm, and contains some very curious items, showing the fastidiousness of this daughter of the Cannebitire, who wore black silk nightdresses at £6 each, and iudulged in cerise silk garments of a " dual form," until her acount with the milliner and dressmaker, the " Prudence " of the comedy, came to £1200. Fanny declines to pay the bill, producing a receipt from Madame O , who accepted bills in payment from two gentlemen, whose names are mentioned, but who have moat ungallantly refused to do honor to their signatures. The case has been partly heard, and has been adjourned to allow the fair defendant to prove that she really gave value for the bills her quondam admirers signed !
