The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, AUGUST 14, 1879.

The dissolution of Parliament, it is said, is to take place to-morrow, aud tlie writs for the forthcoming election will he issued ou Monday, the 18th instant, and as has been previously stated, they are to be made returnable within thirty days, that is to say, prior to the 17th September, so that by the 14th at the latest the whole of the elections will probably be over. So exciting a time as we have before us during the next fourweeks has uever occurred iu New Zealand before. It is true that at the last general election the question of the abolition or retention of the Provincial forms of Goreriirnent were before the people, but it had come upon them very gradually, and the public mind had been made up beforehand, the I majority in favor of abolition being so large and decisive that in many instances the elections turned more upon the personal popularity of the candidates than upon the views they entertained and expressed. On this occasion, however, the elections foltow immediately upon a Parliamentary session during which more inflammatory speeches have been made than ever before filled the pages of Hansard, and these no doubt will in mauy cases he reflected from the hustings. A spkcial meeting of the Nelsou Football Club will he held at the Masonic Hotel at eight o'clock to-night, for the purpose of making arraugements for a match' with Wellington. We understand that Hi3 Excellency the Governor will pay an unofficial visit to Xelscn in the course of a few days. We learn by telegram that Sir George Grey has given up, for the present at all events, his contemplated visit to Nelson, and that he will open the electioneering campaign at Christchurch, for which place he will leave Wellington next Tuesday. Prom thence he will probably proceed to Dunedin.
