CITY COUNCIL
The ordinary fortnightly meeting was, held last night. Present, all the members except CrHarley. The report of the Public Works Committee recommended that Mr Carter be requested to keep a light burning at night in the -vicinity of his weighbridge; that Mr I Campbell be instructed to cover in his mill I lead, and be informed that if the pipes are not laid, as agreed, within the prescribed time, the water will be shut off; that the following tenders, the lowest of iwbich was accepted, had been received for making a footpath on the Haven Road:— Grant £50, Atkinson £69, Carter £76, Uren £89 10s, Lloyd £94, Taylor £103. . A letter was read from Mr Scaife resigning the auditorship, which elicited some rather strong comments from Cr Trask. kerosene license was granted jto: Mr Ifewaa resolved to close the Town Clerk's

DOMAIN BOARD. : , The Mayor said; with regard to the Botanical Reserve, recently handed over to the Uprppration. that tie thought some steps Should oe taken to convert it into ati orna- ' mental recreation ground, and suggested that a premium should be offered for the best plan of laying it out, and then that tenders should be invited f of leasing it, the plan tti be carried out, and ttie gardens to be open to the public. After some conversation, it was resolved, on the motion of Cr Cross, « That the Colonial Secretary be written to at once, requesting leave to grant a lease for 14 or 21 years. Also, that £10 be advertised as a premium for the best plan for making the Reserve into an ornamental recreation ground and gardens ; and that tenders be invited for leasing the same." The Board then adjourned.
