GREAT FLOODS IN AUCKLAND.
Auckland, Wednesday. There have been great floods up the country. A telegram from Drury states that at liunua huge logs have been tossed tip into the paddocks, and the wire fences covered with grass aud rushes washed up against them. Bridges have collapsed on the great South Road which were repaired only the other day by the County Council. Slippery Creek bridge is washed entirely out of the district. The Belle Brandon, from the Marshall Group, reports continued fighting at the Island of Majura, and that several Native men and wpmen have beeu killed. The Premier leaves to morrow for "Wellington, and Mr Sheehan will probably accompany him. Wellington, Wednesday. Commander Hewitt, R.N., Captain Rose, and Mr J. S. Cross are appointed a Royal Commission to inquire into all the circumstances attending the loss of the Taupo. They leave to-night for Tauranga in the Wauaka. Several shopkeepers are being proceeded against for hangiug goods outside their shop windows. The charge of arson agaiust Mrs Phillips at Kaiwarra is adjourned for a week. The second Resident Magistrate is to take office here almost immediately. Two more of the Maxted family were today ordered to pay 7s 6d per week each towards the support of their aged parents. Several fresh cases of typhoid fever have made their appearance in the same locality outside of the city where the disease first broke out, aud it is supposed these fresh cases originated from some persons who had been working in the place thinking all danger had now passed. The Governor has accepted an invitation i to dinner on the 28th inst. at the Wellington Club. * The limes believes that Ministers have almoßt definitely settled that Parliament shall be called together for Thursday, the 24th July. The Atherijeum has just received a large collection of books of reference purchased with the bequest of the Hon W. B. Rhodes The formatiou of political clubs in order to give more vitality to Colonial politics is again being urged. Mcsssrs W. A. Parkinson and James Gray have been appointed members of the Barnard staff, in the place of C. Crombie and George Downie, the latter accepting another Government appointment. It is stated that Mr Green, the acting Manager of the National Bank here, will be removed to a Southern Branch, aud Mr Heath appointed to the post of Manager. Owing to competition the whole journey from Wellington to Masterton by railway or coach, can now be done for I2s. There is nothing new or interesting in the Australian news per the Rotorua at the Bluff. It is expected that the Waikato Cavalry will take part in the reception of the Governor at Auckland. The Morning Herald at Dunedin has secured the Corporation advertising as against the Times for 3s per inch for twelve months. Bluff, Tuesday night. The Rotorua has arrived. She encountered heavy S.E. gales throughout, having left Melbourne on the 13th instant. Passengers for Nelson: Mrs and Miss Browning, Mr Learmonth, and one in the steerage. Kiiiikiht, Wednesday. The southern boundary of the territory mentioned in Rewi's proposal , or from Taupo to Pukebau, is undefined, as many of the places laid down in the proposal are unknown to the Government and Europeans. In fact the whole of the boundaries are only tentatively given In the northern portion of the reserve the King is reported to have some interest. The boundaries of this block will have to be surveyed. It will be noticed that by the action of Government the original proposals at Hikuraugi to make Tawhiao a kind of independent prineelefc in this territory are now abandoned. The consent of Apipia, Wetere, Tiamui, Hermia, and others to Rewi's proposals enable the Mokau river and its coalfields to be connected with the old Waitara line of railway at once, as the owners are anxious for the working of the Mokau coal. It will enables the owners to run a line of rails up the Mokau river for some distance, and the probability of the objecting landholders preventing its continuation thence to Aramuku or elsewhere will be considerably lessened. Apiha and Wetere are firmly determined to open Mokau. The Native Minister, Rewi, aud others go to the Cambridge Land Court to-day with a number of Natives. Otaki, Wednesday. The schooner Colleen Bawn that was wrecked here a short time ago, was successfully launched in the Otaki river yesterday, under the supervision of Mr James Cootes.
