[JRKBS AQENOY.] Wellington, Tuesday. There is a good deal of speculation as to what candidates for the Mayoralty will be brought forward in consequence of Mr Dransfield's resignation. The Union S.S., Company have purchased the new steamer Penguin of Glasgow which is superior to the Hawea. They are also negotiating for a fourth. It is stated that the Hon. W. Fox intends I to address his constituents shortly at Wanganui. Two brothers named Maxtead wfere brought up at. the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning for not contributing towards the support of their aged father and mother. The evidence showed that one brother owned 200 acres of land and 20 head of stock, and the other about 70 acres and a lot of stock, and that for years they had not contributed in the slightest degree towards their parents' support, er even enquired how they managed to exist. The Magistrate said it was the first case of the kind he had ever heard in the colony, and he hoped it would be the last. It was a disgrace to the colony to see men in the position of the Maxteads allowing a crippled father and a decrepid mother to be so neglected. He ordered each to pay 7s 6d per week towards the maintenance of their parents. One brother said: "I have no means." The Magistrate replied : "It is of no use your saying that ; the law is more powerful than you, and will find a way to compel you." An information is to be laid against another brother who is not yet summoned. The Hinemoa which arrived about one o'clock, leaves bere for Lvtrelton at 4 pm. She will then take His Excellency to A karoa which place she will leave on Thursday and bring^His Excellency back on Friday. . Lyitbeton, Monday night. Sailed : Stad Haarlem, for London. Christchdrch, Tuesday. The Directors of the Un»on Fire and Marine Insurance Company have decided to postpone the due date of calls number 7 and 8. New Plymouth, Monday night. In the Supreme Court George Heywood was found guilty of maliciously wounding a cow at Tetemaroe on the 25th October last, and sentenced to nine months imprisonment with bard labor, Sir J. Coode's plans and reports of New Plymouth harbor have arrived, and are in the hands of Mr Blackett. A report is in circulation that Honi Pibama, a long tried loyal Chief, is leaning towards Te Whiti, but there is good authority for stating that this is untrue. A great tangi was to take place at Parihaka to-day over the chief Tamahana, who was killed by a fall from his horse on Friday. Tamahana was lately gazetted a Native Assessor, and Te Wbiti said he would not have been killed had he adhered to him. Poet Chalmers, Monday night. The body of a seaman named Johnstone, who was drowned from the Swedish barque Frederick and Carolina, was picked up this morning in the harbor. „ v - Tb Kopua, Tuesday. Nothing has been done hero yet. The King refuses to intimate his intentions or to come with his people to vi9it the Ministerial quarters, Kewi is annoyed at this delay which he considers an insult to his guests. The Kingites have invited the Ngapuhis to risit them, but the fetter's representative has refused to comply with the request. The Waikatos^conaider that the Ngapuhia should visit them and openly talk over affairs in , the sight of all the tribes and iv the presence of the Government. . HoKrriKA, Tuesday. The list of objections to names ou the Electoral Roll was published this morning. There aro 701 names objected to, among which are those of many old residents and prominent citizens, the ground of objection . being that they are aliens. New Plymouth, Tuesday. At the Supreme Court this morning, Grengall pleaded guilty to killing his half brother, Ferdinand Paul, at Normanby on the 16th January last, and was sentenced to six months imprisonment with hard labor. Auckland, Tuesday. News from Rorotonga reports the loss of an American schooner in a gale at the Scilly Islands. There were 26 persons in all on board. The island is a barren sand bank, i but they subsisted for three weeks on their provisions, when they were rescued by the schooner Caroline, and taken to Tahiti. The City Council are making preparations for the Governor's reception. The Auckland Club has also convened a meeting to , consider a proposal to entertain His Excellency at a banquet. A young woman has been arrested charged with leaving he,r infant son on the footpath in Wellingtonjatreet wrapped in a blanket with a feeding bottle. The poor infant, ' when found, was soaked with rain.
