WAIMEA ROAD BOARD.
This Board held its monthly meeting on Saturday, March 20. Present — Messrs Win, Bell, Hollßnd, aor] Fowler ; Mr Win chair maD. The minutes of last meeting were read. The Overseer read the following; report: — "Mr Martin informs 'me that unless the gravel is removed and paid for from the creek running through his property at Stoke, and which he considers he had sold to the Board some time ago, be will forthwith commence an action for breach of contract and for damages sustained. As you are aware this gravel was never purchased, and the former oceopier of the land had offered the Board sixpence per yard to cart it away, and it was declined. — In Waimea East Mr O'Connell has done bis contract of road forming. — In Aniseed Valley the sum of £20 has been subscribed towards improving the road, which they ask to be supplemented by double that amount, tenders invited and work let before the winter sets in. — A notice should be advertised requiring all persons to cut and trim their hedges as they are encroaching on the roads. — In Spring Grove a new framed bridge , is necessary, by Mr Thomsson'e, the present one not being safe for heavy traffic. The creeks are being cleared out and material used on the Cemetery and Bridge Valley roads. —-In Wakefield the gravelling at the foot of Spoener's Range has been let to Messrs Carvell and Co for the sum of 26s per chain. — There are 30 chains of road in 88 Valley, which was formed laat year, and now requires metalling; this ought to be done st once. It will not do to neglect the Jemmy Lees' stream any longer, or the road will be carried tway, Mr A. Robertson wishes to interview the Board with respect to this work before any deoision ia come to. Meiurs Holland and Thomas apply for the sum of £12, subsidy granted towards gravelling, which has been done in a satisfactory manner. According to your instructions the lower end of Pigeon Valley road is being widened. — In Waimea West the road leading to Mr Boltoo'a has been formed as far. as cross-roads; cost, £21. lam having the roads on the Moutere Hills and Evea's Valley repaired. — la Dovedale Mr Daviea has completed his contract. It would be a great boon to ibis district if a cheap wire suspension bridge was thrown across the Dove at Cuckoo point, the present makeshift being rather dangerous for children going to school when the river is high." Resolved, That should Mr Martin commence the threatened action, the Board's solicitor be instructed to defend the case. Resolved that tenders be invited for the work in Aniseed Valley, also for a bridge by Tbomaeon's, and 88 Valley. The Waimea Board is aware, sod the Upper Motueka Board admit*, that no ■uch sum (nor any part of W) was ever so spent, but how the mistake aroße, and wi*h whom the blame reets for the mis-application of the amount, there was no means of forming au opiniou. This sum of £500, with ibe £300 spent by ihe Upper Molueka Board, as their share of the vote, and the sum of £173, now avowedly in the hands of the Government, and offered to the Waimea Board as tbe remaining balance of the vote make up (with tbe exception of £27, given, I believe, to the Motueka Board oat of the vote) the whole cf Ihe £1000 originally voted The County Council is doing its almost to prevent the great wrong being done to tbe settlers of Oroooco and Stanley Brook throogh the diversion of the funds voted for their benefit, and have applied for, and trust to obtain,, a new vote in the next session of the sum to which those settlers ere entitled.''
