MOTUEKA HIGHWAY BOARD.
Monthly meeting, March 22nd, 1879 All the members present. The Secretary read the following rpport : — Since last m .eluig I have inspected nearly the whole of the prrpoeed Riwaka - Takaka new track between the Stockyard and the Summit, ard am of opinion that the amour. i nl'ot.ed for the work (£500) will be all required, some parts being very rocky. While on the hills I met with a member of the Takaka Road Board who informed me Hint Mr Charles Lewis hsviner surveyed and graded tbe Hop from the T«k>ka end to the Stockyard for the Taknka Board he would bave any pappre relating lo the same forwarded to me, and from a document received f find the distance to be msde by this Board is 4|- miles, and the B'fepeet grade Ift in 10ft, of which there is about 62 chains only, the rest varying from 1 in 12 to 1 in 25, wiih 22 c-haius level, and 127 chains d.sciihed as slight rises end fall.. Mr Roch f ort has not yet begun the surv^ y of the Pimgatotara new road, but proposes doing so next week. The bridge across the Waiwero river on the PantiHtotfira road is finished, the rock beirg npar the sutface and the piles not driven very ff.r. I found it necessary to hive extra work done to tbe amount of £6 10__ It is desirable that willnwg should he planted on the river banks *>oth above and below the bridge. I have invited tenders for the approaches. The men to whom tha work of clearing the gravel reserve of gorse at Lower Montere wbb let, having neglected lo proceed with the work. 1 1 aye invited freeh tenders. Mr E. Boyes having begun clearing out the watercourse running through bis land in the Riwaka Swamp I have invited tenders for the reaessary work to tbe road ditches. The bank of Waterfall Creek at Ngatimoti having given way on the north side I found it necessary to have some work done at once in order to prevent injury to the bridge. The timber oriered for repairing the Lower Moutere bridge has been delivered, but I find that nearly all the stringers are very much decayed, and believe when the top is taken rff it will be found that the whole of the bridge (piles excepted) will require renewing. I have invited tenders for gravelling a piece of the Neudorf road, which was very bad last winter owing to the heavy timber traffic. Letter from the Public Works Department read, having reference to the proposed expenditure upon the RiwakpTakaka new track, and »i J 0 the copy of an agreement signed by the Chair man of [the Board, undertaking that tbe amouut allotted for the work shall be expended upon that portion of tbe track lying between the stockyard and tbe summit. Resolved, That the woik be laid out, and tenders invited for tbe same as foon as possible. Resolved, That the Commissioner ot Native Reserves be paid the same amount for the land token for tbe new road through the native sections in Pongatotara, as tbe owners of land where tbe road has been made above tha said sections. Resolved, Tbat a footpaih be made upon tbe west bank of the Motueka * river, through Mr Thomas Grooby's land, where tbe road has been washed away. Resolved, That the bridge Bcroas the Lower Moutere be put in substantial repair, and that a good wooden bridge be built across tbe watercourse upon tbe main ro\d t near Mr Alcoti's. Letter from Yr Mytton read, stating tbat there is no road io the Graham Valley, acd tbat in consequence be has a horse aod cart which is of no use to him, and further, tbat be shall bold the Board responsible for any accident that may happen. Resolved, Tbat Mr Mytton be referred to a letter written to Mr Heatb, (his neighbor) in November last, having referenco to a road in Graham Valley. Resolved. That the Company's diich in Lower Moutere be cleared of obstructions, and straightened where required. Resolved, That two bridges upon the Rosedale road be repaired. Resolved, Tbat tbe crossing of the Wakarewa river, by Mrs Heath's, be improved. Resolved, That the hollow places in the road between Meyer's and Wildman's be filled up. Resolved, Tbat the Secretary make enquiries as to the reason wby Hall is not proceeding with his contract (boating gravel from tbe Montere eutrance) and unless he receives a satisfactory reply, he is hereby authorised to cancel the contract. Resolved, Tbat a return be submitted to tbe Board at its next meeting, ■bowing the amount of revenue received from the County Fund during the past year, and the expenditure in each Sob-district. Tbe following tenders were accepted, namely — Cutting gorse upon Gravel Reserve, J. M'C'onochie, £9 per lot ; catting gorse, &c, upon road through Drummoud'a Flat, T. Beßt, £16 4s per lot ; gravelling Neudorf road, D. Beuke & Co., £1 12s per chain ; culvert, Old House road, S. Senior, £7 15s per lot ; Approaches, Waiwero Bridge, J. D. Enow lee, £8 19s 8d per lot ; widening road east ot Mr C. Patties gate, T. S. Woolfe, £6 ; Riwaka Swamp ditcb, by Mr Cedarmano's, John Duncan, £6 8s ; Riwaka Swamp Ditches by Messrs. E. Fry's and Jenkins's, Richard Fry, £7. Warrants were signed lor J. 262 18s 4d,
