The article suggests as a mode of retaliation that fifty acres of land should be given to bodies of men on condition that they hold it for seven years. The nrticle couclude3:— " Here, then, is the answer to Te Whiti, who might be distinctly informed that the Government would plant posts of Volunteer settlements from Waingongoro to Parihaka and maintain them out of the reserves intended to be set, aside for the use of the natives. This is what we should understand by a strong policy, and we are well assured it is one that would prove eminently successful. Whatever power might be legally wanting to give effect to the contract could be obtained from the Assembly wheu it meets." The members of the Club and the legal profession entertained Mr J. C. Crawford, the late R.M., at a dinner last night. Mr Crawford arrived here in 18:59, and there were only about three present who were here at the same time. The million acres of land just purchased by the Government will be got ready to be put up for sale at once. The amouut'realised is to contribute towards the cost of constructing the main trunk line of railway to the West Coast of the North Island. The Government have completed negotiations for purchasing between 90,000 and 100,000 acres in the Taupo district. Otaki, Wednesday. Joseph Nugent, cook at the Telegraph Hotel, and formerly cook of the Government boats Stella and Hinemoa, was found dead at the foot of the stairs this morning about six o clock. An inquest is now being held. Palmerstox, Wednesday. A large saw mill and dwelling house belonging to Richter acd Nannestad was totally destroyed by fire last night. The damage is about £2700.
