The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1879.
We have received no English telegrams to-day, owing to communication by the overland line to Adelaide being interrupted by the bush fires that are now raging. Up to the time of our going to press there were no tidings of the San Francisco mail at Auckland. Those wbo are performing in " Robinson Crusoe " are reminded tbat a rehearsal will take place to-morrow evening at the Theatre Royal at _ o'clock. Sergeant Christie arrived by the Wellington yesterday from Wellington, and has gone out to Brightwater to commence the work of making the butts, erecting the targets &c. Several of the Local Committee drove out this afternoon to decide upon tbe sites, and to-morrow the work will be taken in hand. We understand that there are likely to he at least 200 competitors present, and in addition to these there will probably be a number of visitors. The firing commences on the 3rd March, and will last about ten days. The following cases were heard at the Magistrates' Court tbis morning before 11. E. Curtis and J. li. Dodson Esqs., J.J.P.:— Neame v. Croucher. — Actiou to recover £7 balance of wages alleged to be due. Mr Percy Adama appeared for the plaintiff and Mr Bunny for the defendant. Judgment for plaintiff for £3 10s, each party to pay his own costs.— Malone _. Action i to recover £3 12s lod, amount due for board J
and lodging. Judgment for amount claimed and costs.— Roberts v. Kearna. -Amount sued for, £8 10s dishonored promissory note. Judgment for amount claimed, with costs. The Victorians appear to have got rid of the Kelly gang of bushrangers who have crossed the Murray and gone over to the New South Wales side, where, as our yesterday's telegrams informed us, they have robbed a Bank, and, among other pranks, taken two policemen in custody, and confined them iv the lock-up. Another telegram received since that which was published yesterday gives some slight additional particulars. It says : " The Kelly gang have entered New South Wales. They surrounded and imprisoned the police at Jenlderie in this colony, and took their anils, ammunition, horses, and saddles. They then robbed the Wank: of New South Wales of £2000. and destroyed the Bank's documents," Th e "Australian :; andb?ok n g ; ?C3 the fo j| ov;lng u -ecription of Jertldevle* the place men-tioned--''A post* Hiohfey or'cief. and telSgrapn office on the Billabong Creckj 428 miles SW. of Sydney, it lias five hotels (Royal and others) a public schdol, a court house; lock-tip; police barracks, a few stores, and a population of j 6O persons. The district is a pastoral one, with a scattered population of 2CO persons. A coach plies to the Cootamundra railway station, but the line will soon be open to Wagg'a. TheDeniliquin railway station is about fifty miles S.W." Since the above was in type we have received the following telegram which shows how daring are the little band of outlaws who are now setting at defiance the police of the two largest Australian colonies :— " The Kelly raid on Jerilderie was executed with great judgment. No disguises were used, and it is generally known in the township that the police introduced the bushrangers iguorantly to several persons. There is no further news." A still later telegram dated Sydney to-day, says :— " Troopers have been dispatched from Wagga Wagga after the Kelly gang. The telegraph wires have been cut at Urana where it is believed the Kelly gang are gone."
