Sir, I am directed by the Waimea Road Board to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 28 th ult. in explanation of the citcumstances under which the sums of £400 Bnd £700 for roads from Stanley Brook into the Waimea District were voted, and to state thai, bs regards the former sum, the Board is satisfied with your explanation, although they cannot understand why the vote should have been allowed to lapse, as it was telegraphed for on June 24, in order to keep within th« financial year, and would have been asked for sooner, ha 1 the rpquisite compliance with your instructions permitted. The Secretary Waimea Road Board, — I am instructed by the Motutka Highway Board, and on its behalf, to cordially thank your Board fcr its henrty support in endeavoring to resist the adoption of the Couniies Act, in its entirety, by the Waimea County Council. Resolved, That tenders be invited for gravelliug the Road in Waimea West, from Mr Tomlinson's to Mr Drou's; also for erection a footbridge over the Wai-iti, near the 40 Line. A letter was received from Mr FieemnD.of Thorpe, statiog that Mr Smith, who objected to his putting up slip bars on the road by his land, had encroached with his fence about 9 feet on the same roai, and refused to comply with Mr Freeman's notice to remove the siiae. He therefore requested the Board to take action in the matter. Resolved, That, the Board recommend the parties to eudeavor to amicably settle the matter. Application having been made on behilf of Mr Jellyinan to have the road fo Poor Man's Valley gravelled, Secretary was directed to forward Mr Jellycuan copy of Board's resolution of a former meeting, viz., that the Bohrd could only do the work on condition that the applicants contribute at least ony third of tho cost.
