The Nelson Evneing Mail. Tuesday, February 4, 1879.

Owing to the crowded state of oercolnmnS we are compelled to hold over until fotriorrow our report of yesterday's sports. Messrs. Adrffflg and Pitt were evidently anxious yesterday to tut'ti to account the gathering together of so many people m were to be found on the sports ground. And ncii only the principals but the members of their Committees were busily engaged, and it was quite 1 clertr ,that a most active canvass was being earned on. The ballot box when opened will bitterly disappoint one or the other, as both appear to be equally sanguiflev So far as we are in a position to ascertain the number of votes " actually pledged " is about 150 in excess of the total of those who can possibly vote. The rival candidates invite the electors to meet them to morrow night, Mr Acton Adams at the Provincial Hall, and Mr Pitt at the Theatre Royal. Up to the present time the programme issued by the former is the more attractive of the two, as, in addition to his own eloquence, Mr Haddow is to deliver an address. Mr Pitt should see to this, and endeavor to provide a3 varied a bill of fare as his opponent. A telegram from Westport states that a Commission is sitting there to enquire into certain charges made against Mr Charles Broad, R.M. From a gentleman recently arrived from Westport we learn that Mr Broad had complained at head quarters of the officer's inefficiency, and that he retaliated by preferring the charges mentioned in the telegram.
