John Xorris, who arrived at Nelson in the Rolton, the fourth immigrant ship that came out under the New Zealand Company in the year 1542, spent the whole of his time since then in the Nelson province as a worthy aud respected settler. He was one of the true stamp of men to whom we are iudebted for making the colony what it is by the earnest manner in which they set to work at the task they had taken in hand. He was ihe father of a large family of children, and lived to see many graud-children and great-grand-childreu growing up around him, the adult members having become useful settlers i in different parts of the district For several weeks past his health has been fast decliuiug, but he was able to walk about until a couple of days before his death, when his fast increasing weakness compelled him to takts to his bed, where he gradually sank, and on the evening of the 2Hh peacefully passed away, surrounded by many members of his family.
