At the Police Court to-day, before IL C. Daniell F.sq. J.P., Annie Limond was charged with being drunk and using indecent language in Hastings-street last uight. Fined 20s and costs or 48 hours for the first offence, and £5 or one month for the second. We understand that, in consequence of representations made to him, the Resident Magistrate has decided to appoint an officer to see that the provisions of " The Employment of Females Act " are duly complied with. As there are many persons in Nelson affected by this Act we shall tomorrow publish a short resume of its provisions. At the settling up last night on the late Athletic Club Gathering the sum of £117 lls 5d was paid, leaving a balance in hand of nearly £20, so that the first sports held under the auspices of the Club proved a finaucial as well as a gymnastic aud social success. The announcement that Mr Chisholm, who has done so much for the Club, was about to leave for the North Island, was received with great re»ret, and it was decided that he should carry away with him some substantial recognition of his services. It was also resolved that the sports inaugurated under such favorable circumstances should be held regularly on New Tear's Day. It may not be generally known that under certain new regulations all Court fees must now be paid in stamps. Thus when a drunkard is fined he pays his money to the police who have to send out and purchase stamps with which to pay the costs to the Clerk of the Court. Possibly there may be some good reason for the new system, but to the uninitiated it certainly does appear to be full of absurdities. The particular kind of stamp required for this purpose may be obtained from Mr Oakey. As the Anniversary of ;the Province falls this year on a Saturday the customary Friendly Societies fete will be held on the following Monday, when a very successful gathering is anticipated. Elsewhere will be found an advertisement calling for tenders for erecting and taking down the largo booth. A Melbourne telegram to the Post, dated 4th instant say 3 : — The Australian Steam Navigation Company will reduce greatly the number of Chinese in their employ within one month from the present date. They have decided that in future they will employ no Chinese in the Queensland trade. Their employment of Chinese will be confined exclusively to the trade between Sydney, Noumea, Fiji, and China. All the coloured men in the company's employ have been discharged. The employees in the engineering and shipping departments of the company's staff resume work on Monday to the number of 1000 men.
