Un .New 1 ear's morning a large number of roughs assaulted a couple of Chinamen who ran into the Pier Hotel for protection followed by a crowd of about a hundred The police several times disputed the crowd ajid rescued the Chinamen, but the crowd always collected again. As the Chinamen were on their way home they were again -assaulted and had to seek refuse in the Empire Hotel, where they had to remain till >bout four, in the morning, during which time the crowd remained outside waiting for them. ~ .•■ Arrived-Pleiades from London after a fine weather passage of 89 days. The -Interprovincial Champion Wnaleboat Race had no entries although the first prize was £75, and the second £25 Ihe Double Sculling Race had two entries, both Christchurch Club's, and was won by Lanauze and Hearn. For the Champion, lacht Race there were two entries— the Dove (late Jimmey Flynn), and Mira (late Fleetwing). For the Junior Whaleboat Race there were four entries, one a Christchurch crew, the race being won by a Lytteltou crew. For the Sailing Race in open boats there were five entries; won easily by Bailey's Auckland boat. For the Toy Canoe Race four starled, Lauauze, of Chrislchurch, winning.
