Some doubts having been expressed aa to whethor-Mr Hooper after being, nominated as a candidate for the Mayoralty could withdraw without forfeiting his -deposit,' .ye have looked, jhto the matter, sun} find-that the question is set at rest by the 15th section , of the "Regulation of- Local Elections Act," •which provides as follows:—" If a candidate at any election .'sign and deliver to. the Returning Officer not later than two clekr* days before the polling day a papor in the form of the 3rd schedule, stating that such .candidate retires from the-election, the Returning Officer shall give public notice of such paper; and if by such retirement the nupiber of candidates ;is -reduced , k to ; the nuniber of vacancies to be filled the Returning' Officer shall publicly declare the. remaining candidates to be duly elected," ' The lease of the Government Wharf for 'twelve months was put up to auction at' the Crown Lauds Office- at noon to-day .when between 40 and 50 people were present. The upset price was MQQ, apd the increase in the bidding was to b.q,£so at a time. ' There was a brisk competition, between Messrs N. Edwards and Co! and'lytessrs Cross Brothers, and eventually theJormer became the purchasers for £950. Mr Garrard, the Conductor, Was very ably assisted by several ladies and gentlemen, who, both in the solos and choruses,, gave great satisfaction and elicited the -warm atoplau's-p of a very appreciative audieiico. The song entitled " Wings," sung hy one of the lady performers, was greatly admired nnd elicited an encore, as did also the same lady's pong" Dnbliu Bay," " as well asjthe songs " Dreamland " and " Far Away." The »• British Lion," rind the " Sexton" were a'so. very ably rendered by one of the gentlemen singers, ns were also those by the Conductor Hearty votes of thanks to the Chairman and performers brought a very pleasant meeting to a close at 10 o'clock, all having been well pleased with the evening's entertainment, and hoping that the programme might be shortly repeated in Nelson. An Auckland paper gays that Mr Tom Russell made £150,000 one afternoon on the London Stock Exchange, when war between England and Russia appeared imminent.
