Speculators from Dunedin and Christchurch are buying up at fancy prices, and a great deal of land, both Crown and private, has changed bauds during the week, and it is said that the Waste Lands Board will be deluged with applications this week. As a rule the buyers are agreeably surprised with the quality of land. A report came to the police this morning of a horrid murder at Waikawa. A man named Welsh is said to have killed his wife; particulars not to hand. llokitiki, Tuesday. The Board of Education having been in a straitened financial :for some months past has resolved upon reducing the salaries of the teachers and officers of the staff who are in consequence generally dissatisfied, and the best teachers are likely to resign. The Board is also threatened by creditors, the accouut at the bank being overdrawn to the extent of several thousand pounds, and unless early assistance is afforded, the whole educational system will be seriously jeopariosed. Tuesday. Arrived— Ship Parera, from London, 92 days out. The City of New York has arrived from Sydney. Her news is as follows: — The Victorian loan of five millions includes one million for the purchase of the Hobson Bay railway; £200,000 for Parliamentary Buildings and new Law Courts£2oo,ooo for State schools, and two and a half million for new railways. The last general election cost £9,400, and the census £12,400.
