Speculators from Dunedin and Christchurch are buying up at fancy prices, and a great deal of land, both Crown and private, has changed bauds during the week, and it is said that the Waste Lands Board will be deluged with applications this week. As a rule the buyers are agreeably surprised with the quality of land. A report came to the police this morning of a horrid murder at Waikawa. A man named Welsh is said to have killed his wife; particulars not to hand. llokitiki, Tuesday. The Board of Education having been in a straitened financial :for some months past has resolved upon reducing the salaries of the teachers and officers of the staff who are in consequence generally dissatisfied, and the best teachers are likely to resign. The Board is also threatened by creditors, the accouut at the bank being overdrawn to the extent of several thousand pounds, and unless early assistance is afforded, the whole educational system will be seriously jeopariosed. Wellixgtox, Monday. The Gazette to-night will contain regulations altering rates of postage. Any article of merchandise, raw or manufactured, not dangerous, may be sent by parcel post; also seeds, cuttings, bulbs, and roots; postage Id per two ounces. Press manuscripts, intended for publication, may be sent at book post rates; no book packet to be sealed or otherwise closed against inspection. Legal documents may be sent by book post. These charges to come into force from 4th instant. Wellixgtox, Saturday. The following programme has been arranged for the Ilutt races on 6th and 7th February next.— On the first day; Maideu Plate of 75 soys.; Hurdle Race of 50 soys.; Wellington Gold Cup value 100 soys. with 500 soys. added; HuttPark Stakes of 50 soys; Flying Stakes of 50 soys. Second day: Wellington Derby of 100 soys.; Hurdie Handicap of 75 soys.; Racing Club Handicap of 200 soys.; Free Handicap of /SO soys.; Empire Plate of 100 soys.; Consolation Stakes of 50 soys. Arrived : Barquentine Jessie M'Donald, from Foochow, which she left on the 7th of July. She brings 9,882 packages of tea, and 275 packages of matting and sundries. The ship and cargo are consigned to Messrs. Turnhull and Co. Acckland, Monday. A petition against Mr Curtis's Bill to legalise denominational education placed in circulation on Friday last, has already received the signatures of 2000 adults. It will be sent to Mr Swanson by the Taiaroa, and, if necessary, a new petition will be circulated, it being estimated that 5000 signatures might; be obtained in the city and suburbs alone, within a week. Tuesday. Arrived— Ship Parera, from London, 92 days out. The City of New York has arrived from Sydney. Her news is as follows: — The Victorian loan of five millions includes one million for the purchase of the Hobson Bay railway; £200,000 for Parliamentary Buildings and new Law Courts£2oo,ooo for State schools, and two and a half million for new railways. The last general election cost £9,400, and the census £12,400.
